Taylor Sheridan had a successful career in film, but he became hugely popular with the creation of Yellowstone. Since then, the world surrounding the show – often called the Duttonverse – has grown, and Sheridan has just released another addition to it.
The new show Marshals, starring Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, began airing on CBS on March 1st. Despite continued strong interest in the Yellowstone world, the series didn’t receive positive reviews right away. In fact, Marshals recently earned a low score of 43% on Rotten Tomatoes, setting a disappointing record for the platform.
This is a particularly disappointing turn for the Yellowstone universe, which has generally received positive reviews across its three shows. It’s also a first for Taylor Sheridan, as this is the first television show of his to receive negative reviews.
What Are Critics Saying About Marshals?
The TV show Yellowstone first aired in 2018 and concluded after five seasons in 2024. Since then, two prequel series have been released: the 10-episode 1883, and 1923, which lasted for two seasons.
Marshals is the first sequel series based on the original show, but initial reviews aren’t very positive. It’s important to remember that reviewers only had access to the first three episodes out of the thirteen that will air.
According to Alex Maidy of JoBlo’s Movie Network, the show is a typical CBS procedural – predictable and unremarkable. It lacks the compelling qualities that made Yellowstone so popular.
Doll pointed out that three episodes isn’t enough to really get a feel for a show. He hopes Marshals will eventually find something compelling to keep viewers engaged, but feels that strong start should have happened right away.
In a review for ScreenRant, Ana Dumaraog praised the new series Marshals, calling it a risky but potentially rewarding addition to the Yellowstone universe. She noted that the first three episodes suggest the show could be very successful.
The first three episodes of Marshals heavily reference the world of Yellowstone, which isn’t surprising. This approach quickly establishes a sense of familiarity for viewers, reinforcing the idea that Marshals is a direct continuation of the popular series that many felt ended prematurely.
The series doesn’t have an audience score yet, and critics are split on it. One reviewer praised its strong start, calling it “perfect,” while another found it ultimately “disappointing.”
What’s Next in the Yellowstone Universe?
Taylor Sheridan has reportedly reached an agreement with NBCUniversal, though it won’t begin until late 2029. This gives the popular TV creator more time to develop new content within the ‘Duttonverse.’
Sheridan’s next show, following Marshals, was initially planned as a spin-off of Yellowstone. However, the project evolved, and it ultimately moved away from being connected to Yellowstone at all.
Despite the recent news, several other Yellowstone spinoffs are still in the works. 1944 has been confirmed and is currently being developed, and The Dutton Ranch, which will follow Beth and Rip after the end of Yellowstone, is already filming. Plus, another series called 6666 is also in development.
Marshals releases new episodes every Sunday on CBS, with a release on Paramount+ the following day.
