Taylor Sheridan’s Landman Is Fighting The American Revolution on Streaming

For the last ten years, Taylor Sheridan has been a major force in high-quality American television, most notably with Yellowstone and other popular streaming shows. Now, he’s breaking new ground, challenging the established style of renowned documentary filmmaker Ken Burns.

As of November 29th, FlixPatrol reports that Landman is the most popular TV series on Amazon Prime Video worldwide. Interestingly, this drama starring Billy Bob Thornton originally aired on Paramount+. Ken Burns’ latest documentary, The American Revolution, is second globally, but it’s actually the most-watched program in the United States.

Taylor Sheridan’s success isn’t limited to Landman. His other show, starring Sylvester Stallone and also available on Paramount+, is currently fifth on Amazon’s worldwide charts. Having two shows in the top five is impressive, particularly since Amazon isn’t the primary streaming home for these series.

While Taylor Sheridan is currently very popular on streaming services, this success likely won’t last, especially for Paramount and Amazon. His large deal with NBCUniversal, starting in 2028, means he’ll be creating new content for them, leaving Paramount with only his older shows and movies. Even for NBCUniversal, there’s a growing concern that the quality of Sheridan’s recent projects is declining and audiences are losing interest.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, viewer approval for Yellowstone dropped significantly, falling from 82% in Season 4 to only 37% in Season 5. The spin-off Landman also saw a large decrease in audience score, nearly halving from the mid-60s to around 40%. One critic highlighted a key issue, noting that after creating many shows, it’s becoming obvious that Taylor Sheridan is repeating similar characters and storylines. These declining scores suggest viewers are losing interest, but data from FlixPatrol indicates that audiences are still tuning in large numbers.

Burns’ and Sheridan’s Unglamorous America Have Streaming Staying Power

The upcoming film by Burns and Sheridan promises a compelling contrast – both filmmakers are known for portraying a raw, unpolished side of American life. While promoting his latest work, The American Revolution, Burns explained his approach. During a conversation with comedian Hasan Minhaj, he addressed the question of whether George Washington should be considered a hero or a flawed figure.

We often expect people in the public eye to be either perfect heroes or complete villains. But real heroes aren’t perfect; they have both strengths and weaknesses. This person doesn’t need to be either saved or condemned; he’s simply flawed and acts impulsively.

The documentary The American Revolution is receiving high praise, earning a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics are particularly impressed with Ken Burns’ honest portrayal of George Washington – showing his risky decisions and near-death experiences – and his willingness to address the complicated issue of westward expansion and its impact on Native Americans as key factors driving the revolution. This level of candid analysis is reminiscent of the work of historian Garry Wills.

In The American Revolution, Burns revisits history with his signature thoughtful style, a welcome change as some critics feel Taylor Sheridan’s storytelling formula is losing its freshness. The show’s current position as the second most popular on streaming suggests audiences still appreciate Sheridan’s honest and compelling narratives – the qualities that made him a major success.

Despite growing criticism, Taylor Sheridan remains a major force in streaming, while Ken Burns presents a grittier, more honest look at American history. NBCUniversal is heavily invested in whether audiences will continue to tune in to Sheridan’s shows, even as reviews become less favorable – that’s the key question they’re watching closely.

Landman is currently available for streaming on Paramount+.
