Taylor Sheridan fans have a reason to be disappointed at the end of April: one of his popular films will be leaving Netflix on April 30th. Though Sheridan is now famous for TV shows like Yellowstone, Lioness, and Tulsa King, he actually began his career writing movies before transitioning to television.
The 2015 action thriller, directed by Denis Villeneuve (known for Dune), marked writer Taylor Sheridan’s impressive first screenplay. The film stars Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, and Josh Brolin, and centers on an FBI agent tasked with infiltrating a special unit created to take down a major Mexican drug cartel boss. As she gets deeper into the operation, the agent discovers things aren’t what they appear and is forced to confront difficult moral choices.
The action thriller Sicario arrived on Netflix in March, but will be leaving on April 30th. It’s typical for streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video to only have movies for a limited time, so if you want to see what many consider Taylor Sheridan’s best film, you’ll need to watch it soon.
‘Sicario’ Feels Disturbingly Authentic
Unlike films like Scarface, Blow, and Layer Cake that often make the drug trade seem exciting, Sicario offers a more realistic and gritty portrayal. The movie is a visually stunning action thriller, largely thanks to the work of cinematographer Roger Deakins, but it’s also a well-crafted film that feels authentic in its depiction of the subject matter.
I was really struck by how Sicario didn’t try to make the drug war look cool or exciting. Instead, it showed a really messy, brutal, and intense reality, which felt much more honest than most action movies. People are calling it a truly unique thriller, and it has a 91% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes! One critic, Charlotte Harrison, even said it’s one of the most overlooked crime films of the 21st century, and I definitely agree.
The original film received such strong positive feedback that it’s understandable why Sheridan decided to make a sequel. Titled Sicario: Day of the Soldado, the second movie shifted its focus from drug trafficking to human trafficking. Though it wasn’t as critically acclaimed as the first Sicario, many viewers still found it to be a gripping and exciting action thriller.
‘Sicario 3’ Is On the Way

The Sicario films have been successful – the first two earned over $75 million each, despite costing around $35 million to make. Now, Josh Brolin has confirmed that a third movie is in development, stating last year that Sicario 3 was definitely happening.
Details about the plot of Sicario 3 are still a secret, so it’s hard to say what the story will be. We don’t know when filming might start, or if Emily Blunt will reprise her role after not appearing in the second film, meaning the movie is likely a ways off. While we wait, you can watch the original Sicario on Netflix, but it will be leaving the platform on April 30th.
