For the last fifty years, many books by the incredibly popular horror author have been turned into movies. His newest film, the suspenseful thriller The Long Walk, has earned $41.4 million so far. However, it’s a monster horror film from 2017 that is currently attracting viewers on streaming platforms.
It recently climbed into the top 10 most-watched movies on HBO during the first week of October, according to data from FlixPatrol. This rise in popularity likely coincides with the release of the film. It first came out in 2017, featuring Bill Skarsgård in the iconic role of Pennywise, and also starred Stranger Things actor Finn Wolfhard as Richie Tozier.
Andy Muschietti directed the film, with a screenplay by Cary Fukunaga, Chase Palmer, and Gary Dauberman, all based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel. This movie brought It to the big screen, featuring Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise. The story follows seven kids in a Maine town-known as The Losers Club-who deal with everyday challenges, school bullies, and a terrifying clown monster named Pennywise, as summarized in the movie’s logline.
Fans and Critics Alike Praised It
Regarding a film adaptation of one of Stephen King’s stories, It performed exceptionally well financially. According to Box Office Mojo, the movie grossed $327.4 million globally, with a production budget estimated between $30 million and $40 million. Both critics and viewers responded positively to the film, and it currently holds an 85% approval rating from critics and an 84% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, earning it a “Certified Fresh” designation.
, the film also performed strongly in theaters, bringing in $211.5 million globally. In contrast, one of King’s best-known and highly praised movies, The Shawshank Redemption, made only $28.3 million when it first came out in theaters in 1994.
Andy and Barbara Muschietti are developing a prequel series to King’s It, titled It: Welcome to Derry. Jason Fuchs will serve as the showrunner. Welcome to Derry is set decades before the 2017 film It, and will once again feature Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise the Clown. The series will center on the Hanlon family – Charlotte and Leroy, played by Taylour Page and Jocan Adepo – as they move to Derry, Maine, just as an ancient curse begins to plague the town.
The latest Stephen King novel to become a movie is The Long Walk. The film, which premiered in September, features Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Ben Wang, Mark Hamill, and Judy Greer. It’s based on King’s book of the same name and centers around a group of teenage boys who participate in a yearly competition called “The Long Walk.” During the contest, the boys must keep moving at a specific pace, or they face deadly consequences. The Long Walk has also received a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics giving it an 88% score and audiences an 85% score.
Welcome to Derry also features James Remar (Dexter: Resurrection), Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe (Revenge), Rudy Mancuso, and Chris Chalk (Gotham). The show will debut on HBO on October 26th. It (2017) and It: Chapter 2 (2019) are available to stream on HBO Max.
