You know, I totally forgot about Sylvester Stallone’s superhero movie from a few years back! It was a really fun action thriller, but it kind of slipped under the radar. Luckily, it’s now streaming somewhere new, which is great because I heard they’re actually planning a sequel and I want to be ready!
This film first appeared on Prime Video in 2022, but it had a complicated journey to the screen. Originally planned for theaters in 2020, it was delayed several times by the COVID-19 pandemic, so it’s understandable if you forgot about it. Directed by Julius Avery and written by Bragi F. Schut, the story began as an original screenplay, was then adapted into graphic novels, and finally became a movie.
You can still watch Samaritan, starring Javon “Wanna” Walton, Pilou Asbæk, Dascha Polanco, and Moisés Arias, on Prime Video. If you don’t have a Prime Video subscription, you’re in luck – it’s coming to Tubi on April 1st! That means you can watch the movie for free, even though critics didn’t love it, audiences did.
‘Samaritan’ Proved To Be a Divisive Hit
As a film buff, I recently checked out Samaritan, and it’s a pretty cool story. It centers around a kid who starts to believe his quiet, mysterious neighbor, Joe Smith, is actually a legendary superhero everyone thought had died years ago. Apparently, this Samaritan had a huge showdown with a villain called Nemesis, and now, with a new danger popping up in their city, Granite City, it’s up to this kid to get Joe to come out of hiding and be a hero again.
The story is simple, but features a surprising twist. The main character, played by Stallone, is an older hero who just wants peace and quiet. He’s more like the character Logan than Batman – he doesn’t rely on fancy gadgets and feels like an everyday hero, not a powerful, larger-than-life one.
Despite its flaws, Samaritan proved popular with viewers, receiving a 70% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. While many called it one of the best superhero films in recent years, critics weren’t as impressed, giving it a score of only 38%.
‘Samaritan 2’ Is on the Way… Eventually

Prime Video
As a big fan of Samaritan, I was thrilled to hear Amazon announce a sequel back in 2023! The first movie really connected with audiences and did well on streaming, so it’s fantastic that Sylvester Stallone is returning as the lead. Bragi Schut is also back to write the script, which is great news. We don’t know much about the story yet, but considering how the first film ended, the possibilities for where they could take it seem pretty wide open.
Unfortunately, we haven’t heard much news about Samaritan 2 since it was first announced, so it’s hard to say when filming will begin. Sylvester Stallone is currently working on his popular show, Tulsa King, which means it could be a year or even two before Samaritan 2 moves forward.
I’m really excited about this new superhero action thriller! You can already stream it on Prime Video, and if you’re looking for a free option, it’s coming to Tubi starting April 1st. Definitely worth checking out if you’re into that kind of thing.
