A Stephen King adaptation quickly became a major horror hit on television in 2025. The show, It: Welcome to Derry, received great reviews and broke HBO’s streaming records. However, despite its success, it was surpassed by a 10-episode supernatural series that premiered on Syfy earlier that same year.
Like It: Welcome to Derry, the show Revival is based on existing material. While It: Welcome to Derry draws from Stephen King’s It, Revival adapts the comic book series of the same name by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton. However, Revival wasn’t as popular or commercially successful as It: Welcome to Derry.
Despite some initial concerns, the show received positive reviews and currently holds a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Following a successful first season, It: Welcome to Derry has been renewed for at least two more seasons. While the future of Revival is still uncertain after its first season, many believe it deserves a second season just like It: Welcome to Derry to further develop its story.
Revival Deserves A Second Season On Syfy
There are strong signs that ‘Revival’ will be renewed for a second season. Although it hasn’t become a widely popular show, critics have praised it, and there’s plenty of story material from the original comics to keep it going. The first season only hinted at the deeper mythology surrounding the ‘Revivers’ and the increasing military efforts to control them, suggesting a lot more story to tell.
Because Syfy didn’t initially present Revival as a one-season show, it likely considered continuing the series beyond its first season. However, with no announcements about its future, the show’s fate is currently unknown.
I was really struck by the atmosphere in the first season. The show beautifully uses the cold, isolated Wisconsin landscape – it instantly brought to mind the unsettling vibes of shows like Fargo and Twin Peaks. What’s even more impressive is that even though it deals with the ‘revived,’ it smartly avoids typical zombie clichés. Instead of focusing on gore, it builds tension through small-town paranoia and presents the undead in a way that’s strangely… human. It’s a really effective approach.
I was really captivated by Revival. While some of the story felt familiar, it constantly pulled me in with its unfolding mysteries and genuinely shocking, unsettling imagery. What really made it work, though, were the performances – Melanie Scrofano, Romy Weltman, Andy McQueen, David James Elliott, and the whole cast were absolutely phenomenal and brought everything to life.
Despite being a well-received show, Revival hasn’t been officially renewed for another season. While it’s still possible, a return seems less likely now that nearly a year has passed since it first aired.
IT: Welcome To Derry Was Still A Great Addition To The Iconic Horror Franchise
Compared to Revival, the first season of It: Welcome to Derry was more enjoyable for general audiences, hitting many familiar and beloved tropes of Stephen King stories. While the show’s depiction of the Losers Club and their relationships wasn’t as strong as in the films, it excelled at exploring the backstory of Dick Hallorann and showcasing Pennywise’s terrifying violence.
The ending of It: Welcome to Derry, with its time travel element, is seen as a promising development for the future of the franchise. However, the show wasn’t perfect. While viewers enjoyed how it looked, many felt it lacked enough substantial story to fill its length.
Although It: Welcome to Derry featured a large cast of characters, the show spent more time referencing other Stephen King works than actually developing those characters. Because of this, Revival offered a stronger and more satisfying story with better plot development.
Additionally, It: Welcome to Derry was a strong entry in the horror genre, and fans are excited to see how it builds on the time travel plot from the first season. Hopefully, Syfy’s Revival will also get another season to complete its storyline.
