The Housemaid is getting a makeover.
Paul Feig directed The Housemaid, a film based on Freida McFadden’s novels, and it features Amanda Seyfried, Sydney Sweeney, and Brandon Sklenar. The movie was a huge hit, earning over $400 million globally and marking a significant achievement for both Feig and Sweeney.
Lionsgate is creating a stage play based on The Housemaid. The producers, Simon Friend and Hannah Osmolska, are known for successful projects like Paranormal Activity and Life of Pi, and playwright Bekah Brunstetter, who worked on The Notebook, is writing the adaptation. This announcement follows news that a sequel to the movie, The Housemaid’s Secret, is scheduled to be released on December 17, 2027. Jenefer Brown, President of Global Products & Experiences at Lionsgate, shared details about the upcoming stage production.
“The Housemaid” has everything needed for a great stage play: a popular story, interesting characters, and a plot packed with surprises that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. This production shows how we can successfully turn our popular movies and stories into unique live experiences. We’re thrilled to be working with Simon, Hanna, and Bekah to bring “The Housemaid” to the stage in a fresh and engaging way.
I’m so excited to share some big news! As a producer, I’m thrilled that The Housemaid is heading to Broadway! We’re also working on bringing Paranormal Activity to the stage – it’s a dream project for my company, Melting Pot, which I lead with my partner, Osmolska. We can’t wait to share these shows with everyone!
Friend described reading ‘The Housemaid’ as a thrilling experience, noting its strong resemblance to a stage play due to its limited setting and suspenseful plot, reminiscent of classic thrillers. They believe adapting it for live theatre, following the successful film, will amplify the story’s intensity and create a uniquely shared experience, and expressed excitement about collaborating with Lionsgate and Bekah.
McFadden’s books were hugely popular, and the movie based on one of them seems to be following suit. Filming for The Housemaid’s Secret is scheduled to begin this fall, with director Paul Feig back at the helm. Alex Sweeney will return as Millie Calloway, and there’s talk that Amanda Seyfried might reprise her role as well.
I’m really excited about the next film! It’s bringing Kirsten Dunst into the mix, which is awesome. The story follows Millie as she starts a new job working for this tech billionaire, Douglas Garrick, but there’s a huge mystery surrounding his wife, Wendy, who’s kept locked away. As Millie digs deeper, it looks like things are way more messed up than anyone initially thought.
As of today, a Broadway premiere date for The Housemaid hasn’t been announced. However, you can currently watch The Housemaid at home, and its sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 17, 2027.
