Sydney Sweeney’s New Psychological Thriller Ends Tough Year With Best Rotten Tomatoes Score In Busy 2025 Slate

Sydney Sweeney’s latest film, The Housemaid, could be a turning point after a challenging year. The movie, based on Freida McFadden’s popular novel, centers around Sweeney’s character, a live-in housekeeper who discovers unsettling secrets within a wealthy family.

Early reviews are in, and The Housemaid is currently scoring 79% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 42 reviews. Despite the fact that more reviews are still being added, it’s already the highest-rated film of 2025 starring Sweeney, who has had a challenging year.

While not flawless, the thriller The Housemaid is generally considered an enjoyable ride, packed with unexpected twists, tension, and suggestive themes. Many reviewers point out its similarities to classic erotic thrillers. Critics are divided on the overall acting, but nearly everyone agrees that Amanda Seyfried delivers a standout performance as the unsettling wife.

Reviewers are divided on whether the movie successfully captures the spirit of McFadden’s book, but most agree it’s an enjoyable and lighthearted choice for holiday entertainment.

Graeme Guttman from ScreenRant enjoyed the psychological thriller The Housemaid, giving it a 7 out of 10 rating. He described it as a “guilty pleasure” and believes it will be one of the most entertaining films released this year.

The review strongly commends Seyfried, even suggesting her performance is better than Sweeney’s. It concludes by stating:

Despite dealing with some unsettling themes, director Feig’s playful style and Amanda Seyfried’s captivating performance make The Housemaid a surprisingly enjoyable and entertaining film – easily one of the most fun releases of 2025.

Even though her co-star received a lot of attention, this is still a major success for Sweeney, who really needed a boost. She’s faced a difficult few months, with issues surrounding an advertising campaign and a couple of unsuccessful movies.

Every Sydney Sweeney Movie In 2025 Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Score Rotten Tomatoes’ Audience Score
Echo Valley 52% 50%
Eden 57% 73%
Americana 64% 78%
Christy 66% 96%
The Housemaid 79% N/A

As a film buff, I’ve been following Jack Sweeney’s work closely this year – he was in a lot of movies! He had several releases, including American Eden and Christy. It’s a real shame, though, because none of them really connected with audiences. Christy, in particular, had some seriously rough numbers – I think it actually set records for the biggest drop in ticket sales between its opening and second weekend. It’s tough when you see an actor working so hard and the films just don’t perform.

Despite facing competition from the new Avatar film, The Housemaid is expected to do well in theaters, potentially finishing 2025 strong. Positive reviews and the convenient timing around the Christmas and New Year’s holidays should help attract audiences.

This isn’t the first time Sydney Sweeney has had a holiday hit. Two years ago, her movie Anyone But You came out in December and slowly gained popularity over the holidays. She might be able to do the same thing with The Housemaid.

Paul Feig directed The Housemaid, which stars Brandon Sklenar and Michele Morrone. Rebecca Sonnenshine wrote the screenplay.

The Housemaid will release in theaters on December 19.
