Sydney Sweeney is set to play Kim Novak in a new movie about the actress’s life, but Novak has not given her blessing to the casting.
In a recent interview with The Times of London, Novak discussed the casting of Sydney Sweeney in the upcoming film Scandalous!, which focuses on her relationship with Sammy Davis Jr. (played by David Jonsson). Novak admitted she wouldn’t have chosen Sweeney for the role, partly because she feels Sweeney is noticeably taller than her.
Sydney Sweeney Was “Totally Wrong” for the Part
Novak worried the upcoming film, Scandalous!, would overly emphasize the physical aspects of her relationship with Davis, especially with Sydney Sweeney in the role. Novak explained that she and Davis shared many common interests and felt a sexual connection was inevitable, but believed Sweeney was miscast because the focus should have been on more than just appearance. She stated, “She was totally wrong to play me.”
The film Scandalous! was revealed in 2024, with Sydney Sweeney cast in the lead role. It was also announced that Colman Domingo, her co-star from Euphoria, would direct the movie for Miramax. The filmmakers intended to begin production quickly after finishing the final season of Euphoria, but the project’s current status is unknown. Sweeney had previously stated she was thrilled to portray Novak in the biopic.
Sydney Sweeney said she feels privileged to be portraying Kim. She explained that Kim’s experiences – navigating Hollywood, public attention on her relationships and personal life, and controlling her public image – still resonate today. Sweeney added that she personally connects with these struggles in many ways.
After I finish watching Euphoria, I’m immediately diving into Scandalous! and fully immersing myself in the world of Kim Novak. I’m really excited – I can’t wait to learn everything about her!
Sydney Sweeney Previously Portrayed Christy Martin
Sydney Sweeney has played real people on screen before. Last year, she starred in the movie Christy, which told the story of boxer Christy Martin. Martin herself supported Sweeney’s casting, stepping in to defend it after some criticism online.
I’ve always been a resilient person, and that’s been true throughout my life. Now, I’m using that strength to support others. Recently, I’ve noticed some unfair attacks on my friend, Sydney Sweeney. She put incredible effort into this film, not just for herself, but also to help tell my story and bring visibility to the struggles of many who suffer in silence. I want everyone to know what a true friend and advocate she is.
Novak and Davis first connected in 1956 while appearing on The Steve Allen Show. Over the next year, Davis often visited Novak while she was filming, and their connection deepened. By 1958, the press started reporting on their relationship, although Novak refuted rumors of an impending marriage. Ultimately, both Novak and Davis ended up marrying other people.
It’s currently unclear when Scandalous! will be released.
