Sydney Sweeney had already gained recognition in teen dramas before her breakout role in Euphoria, but that show was unfortunately canceled quickly by Netflix. Netflix’s track record with teen dramas is inconsistent. However, they did have success with Sex Education, which ran for four seasons and helped launch the careers of several actors, including Ncuti Gatwa, Aime Lou Woods, Emma Mackey, and Connor Swindells.
Although one teen show on the streaming service became a huge success, not all critically praised shows have had the same luck. The 2020 series I Am Not Okay With This seemed poised for similar popularity to the 2016 hit Stranger Things. Both shows combined teenage drama with a supernatural mystery, focusing on a relatable young girl discovering unusual powers. However, I Am Not Okay With This wasn’t given the opportunity to fully develop and find its audience, unlike Stranger Things.
Netflix has a habit of canceling promising teen dramas too soon, and the cancellation of this show was just another example. While Cobra Kai managed to run for six seasons, another Sydney Sweeney series, Everything Sucks, was canceled after only one. Though Euphoria helped launch Sweeney to stardom, Everything Sucks never got the chance to fully shine.
Netflix Canceled Everything Sucks! Way Too Early
The 1996 comedy-drama Everything Sucks took place in Boring, Oregon, and followed a group of relatable, yet flawed, teenagers. Like the popular but short-lived show Freaks and Geeks – which heavily inspired it – Everything Sucks was unfortunately canceled after only one season. The series focused on Luke, played by Jahi Di’Allo Winston, and Kate, played by Peyton Kennedy, as they dealt with the challenges of first crushes and high school life.
Although Luke and Kate initially seemed like the main characters in the first season of Everything Sucks!, the show quickly became more of a team effort, giving all the high school students a chance to shine. Sydney Sweeney’s portrayal of Emmaline Addario, a drama student and Kate’s first crush, is a great example. Before becoming famous with roles in popular movies like Anyone But You and The Housemaid, and becoming a dedicated fan of Law & Order: SVU, Sweeney captivated audiences as the charmingly chaotic Emmaline.
Sydney Sweeney’s Success Since Everything Sucks! Highlights Netflix’s Mistake
It’s been eight years since Netflix canceled Everything Sucks, and Sydney Sweeney’s success since then really highlights how wrong that decision was. While some of her movies, like Eden, Christy, Madame Web, and Americana, haven’t performed well at the box office, the huge success of The Housemaid – earning $400 million worldwide – clearly shows she’s a major box office attraction.
While the third season of Euphoria received varied reviews after a long break, Sydney Sweeney was highly praised for her work in the first two seasons. Her performances in Sharp Objects and The White Lotus further demonstrate her talent and critical acclaim on television, separate from the popularity of Euphoria. This all points to Sweeney being a rising star back in 2018.
It’s a shame Netflix canceled “Everything Sucks!” after just ten episodes, because the show had a lot of promise. If you’re a fan of teen dramas, it’s definitely worth watching, but be prepared for the fact that it was cut short and never got a full conclusion.
