James Gunn’s Superman movie had an unexpected character removed before its final release. While the film—which kicks off the new DC Universe—featured villains like Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult) and Superman’s clone, Ultraman, merchandise previously indicated an eighth villain, a character called the Yeti, would also appear. However, the Yeti didn’t make it into the finished movie.
To support its awards campaign, Warner Bros. and DC Studios released the script for James Gunn’s Superman movie. The script confirms a character originally known as the Yeti – or, more accurately, the Abominable Snowman – was cut from the final film.

I was reading the script, and it turns out there was a really wild scene cut from the final film! Apparently, Krypto was meant to fly Superman over the bodies of these massive, furry, white kaiju – seriously, huge monsters covered in fur! Then, Superman was supposed to tell him to stop… basically, stop killing abominable snowmen. It was a bizarre detail, and I can see why they might have decided to leave it on the cutting room floor!

Gunn and his team likely cut this scene to prevent the movie from starting with a too-dark or unsettling tone, especially since it showed Krypto potentially being deadly.
The movie’s final version kept the scene where Krypto pulls Superman back to the Fortress, but removed the large, monster-like snowmen that were previously in the background.
The first official glimpse of the Abominable Snowman’s design came in May 2025 with the release of the “Fortress of Solitude Battle Set” playset, which depicted the monster with white fur and menacingly sharp teeth.

So, I was reading Comicbook the other day, and apparently, Matthew Eberle, a VFX artist who worked on the new Superman movie, let slip something pretty interesting back in July 2025. He actually confirmed the existence of…yep, you guessed it, abominable snowmen! It’s a bit of a wild claim, but coming from someone involved in bringing Superman to life on screen, it definitely makes you think.
Originally, a scene showed Krypto pulling Superman past the bodies of several dead Yetis. Superman told Krypto to stop killing them, but that scene was ultimately cut from the final film. I witnessed this firsthand.
Even though the Abominable Snowman didn’t make the final cut, the movie Superman still included a number of memorable villains, including Lex Luthor, the Engineer, a giant monster (Kaiju), the Hammer of Boravia, and LexCorp Soldiers, who were also called Raptors.
Superman premiered in theaters on July 11, 2025, and it is now available to stream on HBO Max.
Why It’s the Right Move for Superman to Omit the Abominable Snowman
The opening of Superman was already strong, showing the hero unexpectedly losing a fight for the first time. Adding a scene where Krypto acted aggressively – even fatally – could have made the beginning too grim, potentially repeating the criticism leveled at Man of Steel for being overly dark.
Cutting that scene was a good decision for Superman because it would have clashed with the movie’s overall hopeful and emotional feel, which was exactly what the director, James Gunn, was going for. Interestingly, when watching the film again, the part where Krypto pulls Superman already makes sense even without showing the bodies of the defeated creatures.
Despite seeming like a myth, the Abominable Snowman might reappear, especially since the Yeti is a known character in DC Comics. This character, whose name is Hu Wei, is actually a Chinese superhuman with the ability to transform into the monstrous creature, and he later joined the team called the Great Ten.
Since the Fortress of Solitude is so central to Superman’s story, there’s still a possibility we could see the Abominable Snowman in a future movie. Perhaps he’ll appear in a short side plot, seeking revenge on Krypton for destroying his people.
