James Gunn, the director behind Superman, has shared why the David Corenswet-led DC Universe film was released digitally ahead of schedule. To date, this movie has raked in more than $585 million globally at the box office. Additionally, it enjoys a high approval rating of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, as it’s deemed “Certified Fresh.
In this film titled Superman, Gunn takes on both writing and directing duties, basing it on the DC superheroes initially conceptualized by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The lead role of Superman/Clark Kent is portrayed by Corenswet, with Rachel Brosnahan playing Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Anthony Carrigan as Metarmorpho, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Edi Gathegi, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, and Neva Howell as Martha Kent. Additionally, the cast includes Alan Tudyk, Michael Rooker, and Grace Chan.
What was the reason for Superman’s early digital release?
Starting August 15, it was recently revealed that Warner Bros. will make Superman available for rental or purchase on digital platforms. Given that the film has been doing quite well in theaters, this news may come as a shock to fans.
In a recent chat with ScreenRant, Gunn explained why Superman’s early digital release was planned. It turns out that this move was necessitated by the upcoming premiere of Peacemaker Season 2. Initially, he believed they had another month before the John Cena-led series would resume. However, it appears that the ultimate decision about the movie’s release strategy was beyond his reach.
Essentially, Gunn stated that the release of Peacemaker has been unexpectedly moved up due to factors beyond their control. He felt that by releasing it earlier, more fans would have the opportunity to watch Superman, even those who couldn’t make it to a theater before Peacemaker was initially scheduled for release.
