Superman Star Vows to Correct Canon Mistakes in Next DCU Movie!

One actor playing Superman pointed out an inconsistency in the storyline that he intends to correct when he reappears in the DC Universe. The new DC Universe, as depicted in films, is being overseen by co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Superman marking its first theatrical release. So far, only Creature Commandos and much of Peacemaker Season 1 are confirmed to be set in this universe. However, one character has already introduced a minor visual discrepancy within the continuity.

Actor Frank Grillo, who plays Rick Flag Sr., acknowledged the discrepancy in his character’s hair color throughout different appearances within the DC Universe. Initially, in the 2024 release of Creature Commandos, Rick Flag Sr.’s character was depicted with white hair and a full white beard. However, when he reappeared in Superman, his original black hair and short facial hair were back, representing a significant shift from just a few months prior.

In my critique, I must clarify a point about Flag’s appearance in the DCU, as reported by Grillo himself. He has confirmed that the character will sport white hair from now on. Interestingly, he filmed seasons 2 of Tulsa King and Superman back-to-back, which left him without time to alter his hairstyle. As he put it, “the audience wasn’t too thrilled about that.

In future projects, if I’m not let go, I’ll likely be sporting white hair. I appeared on the show ‘Tulsa King’, and the rapid succession of appearances with my dark hair didn’t sit well with some viewers. They were quite critical about it!

More recently, Grillo took on a supporting role as General Rick Flag in Superman, where he collaborated with the U.S. government to track down Superman during periods when the hero’s image was tarnished. In the upcoming Season 2 of Peacemaker, Grillo will reappear sporting the same black hair he had in Superman. Later, fans can expect him to resume his white hairstyle, reminiscent of what he wore in Creature Commandos.

At present, Grillo features in James Gunn’s “Superman” alongside David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult. This film follows Clark Kent during his initial years as a Daily Planet reporter and his early relationship with Lois Lane, before he confronts Lex Luthor and Luthorcorp for the first time in a genuine battle. The movie “Superman” is currently playing in cinemas around the globe.

Rick Flag’s Future in the New DCU Post-Superman

In the movie Superman, Frank Grillo had a limited part, but his character is anticipated to have a significant role in the broader DC Universe. This will be realized in the upcoming Season 2 of Peacemaker, where he will join five other villains aiming to cause trouble for John Cena’s character, Christopher Smith, during his second series of episodes.

In this series, Grillo has a wealth of material to explore, as Senior Rick Flag embarks on a pursuit for Peacemaker following the demise of his son, Rick Flag Jr., portrayed by Joel Kinnaman. The previous encounter between the younger Flag and Peacemaker, in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, was particularly significant and intense. This confrontation revolved around a drive containing details about Project Starfish, which culminated with Peacemaker fatally stabbing and silencing Flag to protect the classified information.

Now that Grillo appears set to assume a significant secondary position within the DC Universe, it leaves us wondering about potential other roles he might take on in future projects.

In Season 2 of “Creature Commandos,” it’s anticipated that the villain or complex protagonist will play a significant role. However, no further live-action projects with him have been officially confirmed as of now. Since Gunn and his team haven’t revealed many details about Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters yet, we might learn more about this character in the near future.
