In its opening weekend, the new version of Superman, directed by James Gunn, surpassed Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in domestic box office earnings. This strong debut signals a promising start for DC Studios and sets the stage for future installments under Gunn’s leadership.

Superman’s box office starts with third-best domestic opening of 2025

In the year 2025, Superman made his grand entrance with a staggering domestic opening weekend of $122 million, placing it as the third largest opening weekend of that year. Interestingly, only two other films had greater openings – “A Minecraft Movie” ($162.7 million) and “Lilo & Stitch” ($146 million), surpassing the debut of Man of Steel in 2013 which was $116.6 million.

Based on data from Box Office Mojo, Superman’s earnings within the U.S. make up about 56.2% of the movie’s overall global revenue, which stands at approximately $217 million worldwide following its initial weekend release.

Worldwide, the film raked in approximately $95 million in various international markets. Warner Bros. was responsible for distributing this production, which runs for a duration of 2 hours and 9 minutes and carries a PG-13 rating. The global box office earnings encompass revenue from both domestic and foreign regions during its release period from July 11 to 13.

In contrast to its predecessor, “Man of Steel” from 2013, the 2013 release of Superman managed to outperform the domestic opening of $116.6 million that “Man of Steel” had achieved initially. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that “Man of Steel” accumulated a total global gross of $670.1 million during its time in theaters, with 56.6% of this amount coming from international ticket sales.

In this adaptation, David Corenswet takes on the role of Clark Kent (Superman), with Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult stepping into Lex Luthor’s shoes. The narrative revolves around Clark balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his career as a human reporter, all while dealing with public doubt and confronting the machinations of Lex Luthor. This production is under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios, along with Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has an 83% critic rating from 355 reviews and a 93% audience rating based on more than 10,000 ratings. The film premiered in select international locations initially, before it was widely released in the U.S. on July 11.

In the opening weekend of 2025, Superman has achieved the third highest domestic box office opening of the year, surpassing the domestic debut of Man of Steel by more than $5 million.
