It’s certain that James Gunn’s Superman will be considered one of the year’s biggest movie hits of 2025. The film quickly became popular after its release in early July, receiving a lot of positive attention from both audiences and critics. It earned more than $600 million around the world during its time in theaters (making it the third highest-grossing movie of the year in the US and seventh worldwide). Given how much people enjoyed the David Corenswet-starring superhero film, it’s not surprising that it became the most successful premiere on HBO Max since Barbie?
As a big film fan, I’ve been keeping an eye on streaming numbers, and Superman has really taken off! It’s been available on HBO Max for just 10 days, but it’s already been viewed around 13 million times. According to Variety, that’s the best performance for a new film on the platform since Barbie dropped in late 2023. It’s amazing to see so many people checking it out!
The industry hasn’t released a detailed breakdown of who is watching the movie, but it’s likely a combination of people who saw Superman in theaters originally and wanted to see it again, and those who missed it in cinemas but were curious after hearing positive buzz for the past three months.
With the recent release of Superman generating a lot of buzz, users are not only watching the new film but also revisiting other content featuring the Man of Steel. Notably, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel has seen a 40 percent increase in views over the past 10 days. The new release is also positively impacting other Superman films and documentaries. Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns views are up 120 percent, Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie has jumped 155 percent, and the 2024 documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, has experienced a remarkable 670 percent increase. This isn’t the first time this has happened this year; a similar boost occurred earlier in 2024.
You know, thinking about Superman and Barbie coming out around the same time… I’m actually picturing them as a really fun double feature! They’re totally different stories, obviously, but both are just *good* blockbusters – fun, colorful, positive, and surprisingly smart. It feels like both movies are also a really nice way to honor the legacies of two huge pop culture icons from the 20th century, which I appreciate.
After the huge hit of Superman, James Gunn has confirmed a follow-up movie, Man of Tomorrow, is planned for 2027. However, before that arrives, the upcoming DC film schedule includes Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl (hitting cinemas on June 26, 2026) and James Watkins’ Clayface (expected to be released on September 11, 2026).
