A recent sneak peek at the 2025 Superman film by DC Studios featuring David Corenswet revealed that the hero might not wear trunks, a departure from the traditional Superman look as established in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. Over several months, discussions flourished about whether DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn’s movie would follow this trend. It appears both choices were thoroughly examined during the film’s development.
In a recent video, Maybelle Pineda, who worked behind the scenes in the costume department for the DC Studios’ “Superman,” offered a peek into the surface design process. Given that a production as grand as “Superman” has numerous components operating in harmony, it’s no surprise that costumes were meticulously crafted for each on-screen actor. In this particular case, the costume of actor Oliver Corenswet held special significance because his appearance would serve as the foundation for the visual aesthetic anticipated throughout the DC Universe in the future.
In a recent Instagram update, Pineda posted more than a handful of pictures and clips. Among them was a picture showing Corensweet wearing a blue superhero suit, but without the traditional red briefs that the character is famous for.
The outfit showcases the fresh “S” emblem (as seen in the DC Comics storyline, Kingdom Come) and sports a red cape, while a belt wrapped around Corenswet’s midriff is prominent; however, the lower attire or trunks appear to be absent.
After Gunn unveiled the initial lineup of new projects for the DCU he managed with Peter Safran, he asked fans if they preferred to see his version of Superman wearing the traditional briefs seen in the comic books.
Approximately 59% of those surveyed suggested that Corenswet’s character’s costume should include the trunks. In line with this preference, Gunn decided to incorporate the trunks when creating his first DCU film, featuring them on Superman.
On July 11, 2025, the movie “Superman” debuted, marking director Gunn’s inaugural film within the fresh universe of DC Studios. The star-studded cast includes David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult. In this rendition, Clark Kent is depicted in his initial phases at the Daily Planet, while simultaneously nurturing his bond with Lois Lane and engaging in a significant confrontation against Lex Luthor and other formidable adversaries drawn from DC mythology. “Superman” can currently be seen on screens globally.
Will David Corenswet’s Superman Ever Go Trunks-Less?
Currently, there are arrangements set for James Gunn’s Superman to have a follow-up film, as Corenswet is contractually bound to reprise his role. With this development and considering that he has plenty of years left to portray the character, one may wonder how numerous new costumes his Man of Steel will don in future appearances.
In many superhero films, there is a common trend of introducing updated costumes for the characters, primarily to boost merchandise sales from their production companies. For instance, fans have already glimpsed Tom Holland’s fresh suit for 2026’s Spider-Man: A New Era, and it wouldn’t be surprising if a similar occurrence took place in Gunn and Safran’s upcoming DCU.
Gunn is currently developing the project where we’ll see Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman next. His upcoming suit might continue the tradition of featuring trunks similar to those in his debut film, but there’s also a possibility that Gunn may opt for a different design if he finds it fitting within the storyline.
