Supergirl Teases Its Trailer Launch With a Very Guardians of the Galaxy-Inspired Poster

DC Studios, now led by James Gunn, seems to be winning over comic book fans. But many have noticed that the marketing for their upcoming superhero movie looks a lot like one of Gunn’s earlier, successful films.

The official Supergirl Twitter (now X) account announced yesterday, December 10, 2025, that the premiere of the show will be available online tomorrow. The announcement included a new poster featuring star Milly Alcock in a pose reminiscent of Guardians of the Galaxy.

The promotional image features Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) floating above the House of El symbol. She’s wearing a trench coat, sunglasses, and headphones over her costume. The headphones are similar to the ones Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) wears in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. James Gunn shared another look at actress Milly Alcock as Supergirl, and a sneak peek at the upcoming trailer.

Throughout James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Star-Lord, a reformed space pirate, is known for playing classic pop songs from the 60s, 70s, and 80s on his Walkman, always with his signature orange headphones. But in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, his father, Ego (Kurt Russell), destroyed the Walkman, forcing Quill to switch to a recovered Zune as his new source of “Awesome Mix” music.

It’s probably no accident that Milly Alcock’s Supergirl is seen wearing the same headphones as Star-Lord. This has fans wondering what kind of music Supergirl will listen to in the new movie, directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira – what will her version of an “Awesome Mix” sound like?

The Importance Of Music In James Gunn’s Comic Book Adaptations

Anyone who’s followed James Gunn’s stuff knows music is a huge part of how he works. It’s really obvious when he’s making something based on comics, too – the soundtracks are always amazing and totally fit the vibe.

The soundtracks for the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, which have been nominated for Grammys, are particularly famous – and not just because they perfectly capture the films’ funny spirit. A great example is the first movie from 2014, where Peter Quill deeply cherishes his Walkman and the “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” tape it contains, featuring songs like Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love” and Blue Suede’s “Hooked on a Feeling.” This connection is especially meaningful because his mother made the tape for him before she died of cancer.

James Gunn’s series Peacemaker, which premiered in 2022, is known for its fantastic opening credits sequence. Each episode begins with a memorable dance number set to a great song. Season 1 used Wig Wam’s “Do Ya Wanna Taste It,” and Season 2 featured “Oh Lord” by Foxy Shazam, which also played during a sweet scene between Peacemaker (John Cena) and Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland).

The movie Superman features a unique soundtrack, notably ending with the song “Punkrocker” by Teddybears featuring Iggy Pop. This track highlights the film’s theme of kindness as a form of rebellion, with Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane playfully calling David Corenswet’s Clark Kent’s compassion ‘the new punk rock.’

Okay, so James Gunn isn’t directly working on Supergirl, but when I saw Kara Zor-El wearing those classic headphones – the same ones Peter Quill uses! – it totally hit me. As long as Gunn and Safran are in charge of DC Studios, you just know music is going to be a huge part of everything they do. It’s a little detail, but it feels like a promise of good things to come!

Supergirl is set to fly into theaters on Jun. 26, 2026
