I just watched the new Supergirl trailer, and it’s amazing! It’s not just a great look at Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, but it also introduces a character I think will be incredibly important to the whole story. We get our first real glimpse of Ruthye Marye Knoll, played by Eve Ridley – she’s a young girl who travels with Supergirl, and honestly, I have a feeling she’s going to be a key player when the movie finally comes out on June 26, 2026. Even if you don’t recognize the name now, I think Ruthye will quickly become someone we all care about!

The upcoming 2026 Supergirl movie will feature Ruthye as a major character, not just a supporting one. She’ll play a key role in the story, much like she did in the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book. Footage from the movie shows Ruthye using her distinctive weapon and staying by Kara’s side throughout their journey, reflecting her important role in the original eight-issue comic series. Notably, the comic is told from Ruthye’s point of view as an older woman looking back on her adventures with Supergirl.

The way the story is told influences how readers understand events, but this story might not even have a narrator, and if it does, it won’t necessarily look back on events from the past.

Ruthye’s story in the comics starts with a terrible event: Krem, portrayed by Matthias Schoenaerts in the new movie, kills her father for the simple reason that he wouldn’t laugh at a joke making fun of the king. Following this, Ruthye hires a bounty hunter to get revenge, but the hunter double-crosses her and instead warns Krem.
This causes Krem to encounter Supergirl and Krypto, and he immediately shoots at them before fleeing the planet. Supergirl and Ruthye then team up to chase him throughout the galaxy, setting up the main travel-based storyline of the film.

As Ruthye travels, she becomes stronger and more resilient, ultimately facing Krem in a fight. She manages to injure him, but despite discovering he callously killed her father, she can’t bring herself to finish him off.

Supergirl apprehended Krem, and though Ruthye’s book claims he was executed, the comics show he was actually sent to the Phantom Zone for about 300 years.
The comic concludes with old Ruthye happily reuniting with Supergirl, just as Krem is freed from the Phantom Zone.

He really tried to apologize, but honestly, the story just ends with old Ruthye whacking him with her cane and leaving him right there. He was still alive, though!

I’ve been thinking about the new movie, and since it’s meant to be a really faithful adaptation of the comic, it feels like it focuses more on Ruthye’s story than on Supergirl’s, honestly. It’s like Ruthye is the main character, not Kara!
The movie’s trailer hints at a strong focus on the relationship between Kara and Ruthye. However, it’s still unknown if the ending will take place in the future. The filmmakers, James Gunn and David Corenswet, have described the new DC Universe as being more similar to Star Wars than Marvel, suggesting stories will span a long period of time.
Since this movie also leads into the 2027 film Man of Tomorrow, it will be interesting to see how the story and Ruthye’s journey conclude.
How Much Will Supergirl Adapt Woman of Tomorrow?
The latest trailer confirms the Supergirl movie will be based on the Woman of Tomorrow storyline, though it’s already showing some differences from the original comic book.
The long-anticipated redesign of Krem has been revealed in the trailer, showing a much more alien appearance with distinctive facial markings and glowing eyes. This is a big departure from his comic book portrayal, where he was known for his long red hair, beard, and traditional weapons like swords and crossbows. This new look fits with the overall ‘Gods and Monsters’ direction of DC Studios and makes Krem a visually powerful character, even alongside someone as imposing as Momoa’s Lobo.
The inclusion of Lobo is a significant change, but it actually goes back to Tom King’s initial plan for the story. He originally wanted to feature both Supergirl and Lobo, but editors asked him to leave Lobo out. Now that Tom King has a close working relationship with James Gunn at DC Studios, adding Lobo feels like a natural development of his original vision, not a change of course.
The film appears dedicated to staying true to the emotional core of Kara and Ruthye’s story, while also expanding the surrounding world to fit the larger DC Universe narrative.
