A new short clip from the upcoming Supergirl movie has officially shown us Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El. This is our first look at the character in James Gunn’s new DC Universe. With the full trailer on its way, excitement for the movie’s 2026 release is building.
What happens in Supergirl first teaser?
The initial trailer for Supergirl features Kara Zor-El by herself at a lonely, run-down station that looks like a bus stop in the middle of nowhere.
A woman wearing sunglasses and a trench coat is caught by surprise when a spaceship lands nearby, sending dust and wind flying. This short preview offers the first glimpse of Milly Alcock as the new Supergirl in James Gunn’s updated DC Universe, and promises the complete trailer will be released this week.
This first look at the new Supergirl movie shows a darker, more unique take on the character, setting her apart from her cousin Superman. It marks only the second time Supergirl has appeared in a major film since the 1984 movie, which was intended as a continuation of the Superman films starring Christopher Reeve but wasn’t very successful.
A digital version of the 1984 Supergirl briefly appeared alongside Christopher Reeve’s Superman in the 2023 film The Flash. The new movie will essentially restart her story, presenting a fresh take on the character as part of James Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe.
Milly Alcock stars as Kara, with Eve Ridley playing Ruthye Marye Knoll and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills. Jason Momoa takes on the role of Lobo, while David Krumholtz appears as Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, and Ferdinand Kingsley as Elias Knoll.
Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the film centers on Kara’s space adventure with her dog, Krypto, for her 21st birthday. During their travels, she encounters Ruthye and teams up with her to get revenge on someone.
James Gunn revealed a fun connection between Kara and Superman’s story: Superman was temporarily watching Krypto, a dog, for her. Gunn explained that Kara was being carefree, and it’s later revealed that Krypto isn’t even her dog – she simply left him with Superman (Entertainment Weekly).
Supergirl will premiere in theaters on June 26, 2026.
