It’s reasonable to think that making the new DC Studios film is very expensive. However, James Gunn recently clarified that a reported budget figure was inaccurate.
Forbes Australia recently featured Milly Alcock, the star of Supergirl, in their 30 Under 30 issue, calling the film a “$200 million DC feature.” This led Lakshman Sai Kumar Tumati to question the accuracy of that figure with DC Studios co-head James Gunn on Threads. Gunn confirmed the number was inaccurate, stating it was “not even a little bit true.”
Gunn didn’t share any further details, so the actual cost of making Supergirl remains unknown. It’s unclear where Samuel Hussey, who wrote a Forbes Australia piece about Milly Alcock, got the figure of $200 million, but it’s a plausible estimate.
These days, most superhero movies cost at least $200 million to make. Marvel’s Thunderbolts, with a budget of $180 million, is a recent example of a film that cost less. However, the next Marvel release, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, ended up costing exactly $200 million.
Interestingly, the budget for the upcoming film featuring her debut as a cousin to David Corenswet’s Superman has been questioned. While Warner Bros. and DC Studios stated the film cost $225 million, the Columbus Business Journal reported a final cost of $363 million, according to official Ohio tax credit records.
James Gunn, as he often does, used Threads to dismiss reports, suggesting they might be “faked.” However, a source at The Hollywood Reporter stated the numbers were actually correct.
What Is Known About Supergirl
The movie appears to have been a very expensive undertaking. It centers on Kara Zor-El, a Kryptonian, and her 21st birthday celebration with her dog, Krypto. Their journey takes a dark turn when they meet Ruthye Marye Knoll, leading Kara on a dangerous path of revenge.
Milly Alcock, a 21-year-old Australian actress known for her role in House of the Dragon, will play the lead in the new Supergirl series. Joining her are Matthias Schoenaerts, who starred in The Old Guard, as the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills, and Eve Ridley, from 3 Body Problem, as Ruthye Marye Knoll.
David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham play Kara’s parents, Zor-El and Alura In-Ze, alongside Elias Knoll. But the most exciting new addition to Supergirl is an intergalactic bounty hunter, marking a highly anticipated return to DC films for the actor who previously played Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe.
The upcoming Supergirl movie is directed by Craig Gillespie, an Australian filmmaker known for I, Tonya and Disney’s Cruella. The script is written by Ana Nogueira and is based on the graphic novel Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely – which was initially the movie’s working title.
Supergirl soars into theaters on June 26, 2026.
