Super Mario Galaxy Movie Merch Confirms 1 Non-Mario Nintendo Character

The next Super Mario Galaxy movie will continue to include references to classic Nintendo games beyond just Super Mario Bros. A new character from another well-known Nintendo title has been confirmed to appear. The first movie already paid tribute to Nintendo’s history with nods to games like Wrecking Crew, the original NES console, and Ice Climbers.

Merchandise for the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie revealed a hidden detail fans will appreciate: the return of R.O.B., a classic Nintendo robot, in the film. An image of R.O.B. was included on the Super Mario Galaxy Gateway Galaxy Playset, which was shared online by X user Juan Pablo.

The iconic NES accessory—and later, a playable character in Super Smash Bros.—appears to be working at a ticket booth.

ROB was referenced in a logo in the first Mario Movie but never made a physical appearance.

This character first appeared as a toy that came with the NES in 1985. It was designed to be a fun, interactive robot companion for players as they enjoyed their new video game console. Later, in 2008, the character became a playable fighter in the Nintendo game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Get ready for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, hitting theaters on April 1st! This new animated film from Illumination and Nintendo follows Mario on a cosmic adventure when a new enemy, Bowser Jr., appears. Chris Pratt voices Mario, and the cast also includes Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser. You can find more details about the movie’s cast here.

What Could ROB Be Doing in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?

People who love the Mario games might be surprised to see ROB appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

This character has never appeared with Mario in any game or movie outside of Super Smash Bros., but now they are. While many characters from other game series have been included in Smash Bros., this is the first time they’ve been featured in an animated film from Illumination.

ROB holds a special place for many classic Mario fans. It was included with millions of original NES consoles, often alongside the game Super Mario Bros., so a lot of Nintendo gamers remember ROB as part of their very first Mario experience.

Because of the connection between these brands, the character deserves to be in the new movie. Similar to how other well-known Nintendo games—even those not centered around Mario characters—are included in the Mario films, this character’s presence is justified.

The Mario movies aren’t just about the famous character with the mustache. They’re a tribute to Nintendo’s entire history and how it became a leader in the video game world, with a particular emphasis on the classic NES era. That makes you wonder – shouldn’t ROB the Robot be included in the excitement too?
