I’ve been a fan of both Guy Ritchie and Jason Statham for ages, and it’s amazing to see how far back their working relationship goes! They actually both started their movie careers together with Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels back in 1998. They’ve continued to collaborate ever since, with their most recent film being Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre in 2023. But if you ask me, their absolute best movie together came out in 2000, and I’m thrilled it’s about to be available to stream for free!
Around the year 2000, while people worried about the Y2K bug and the dot-com boom, a fantastic crime film called Snatch was released. Director Guy Ritchie and actor Jason Statham, who had teamed up on Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels just two years earlier, returned to deliver an even more polished and stylish thriller. Ritchie wrote and directed Snatch, starring Statham as Turkish and Stephen Graham as Tommy. The film also boasted an incredible ensemble cast, including Benicio del Toro, Dennis Farina, Lennie James, Ewen Bremner, Vinnie Jones, Alan Ford, and Brad Pitt.
Turkish and Tommy make a living by finding boxers who will intentionally lose fights at a secret boxing club. Their newest fighter, Mickey, a bare-knuckle boxer, proves to be a problem – he’s reluctant to throw matches. At the same time, a diamond robbery in London throws the underground betting world into chaos.
Which Is Better, ‘Snatch’ or ‘Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels’?
While Guy Ritchie’s newer films, such as The Gentlemen, have their followers, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch are generally considered his best work. Both films have strong arguments in their favor – Lock, Stock feels fresher and more innovative, but Snatch is a more polished and complete movie.
The ongoing discussion about which Guy Ritchie film is better often comes down to personal preference, specifically which movie someone saw first. It seems people tend to favor the film they were first introduced to. Fans of Snatch often see it as a more polished take on Lock, Stock, while those who prefer Lock, Stock usually feel Snatch simply retreads familiar ground.
Did You Know ‘Snatch’ Received an Unnecessary Remake?

Columbia Pictures
The TV remake of the movie Snatch was a major disappointment. Released on the Crackle streaming service in 2017, the series starred Rupert Grint (known from Harry Potter), along with Luca Pasqualino, Lucien Laviscount, Phoebe Dynevor, and Juliet Aubrey. The show was written and directed by Alex De Rakoff, who hasn’t worked on another series since. It’s no surprise that the remake received poor reviews, earning only a 39% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
