After much mystery, Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2 finally explains what the Upside Down really is. It turns out it’s not just another dimension, but something much more chaotic and crucial to how the show will end.
What is the Upside Down in Stranger Things Season 5 Vol. 2?
Season 5 of Stranger Things reveals the Upside Down isn’t a separate world at all. It’s more like a wormhole – a bridge between our world and a dark place called the Abyss, where Vecna has been hiding. Dustin explains it as an interdimensional connection.
This structure is held together by a strange, unstable material at its center. What seems like activity within the Upside Down is actually characters traveling through this connection. We learn that Holly didn’t fall within the Upside Down, but instead slipped through the structure connecting our world to it.
As a huge Stranger Things fan, it’s become clear that the Abyss is actually the original scary place, even before the Upside Down! We learned that when Eleven fought Henry back in 1979, she didn’t send him to the Upside Down, but to this older, even more dangerous dimension. It’s where the Mind Flayer and all those other terrifying creatures were already living, basically its original home.
The Upside Down didn’t always exist; it formed on November 6, 1983, when Eleven connected psychically with a Demogorgon. This connection unintentionally created a pathway between Hawkins and this dark dimension. The Upside Down isn’t a place on its own, but rather a distorted mirror of our world, meant to be traveled through rather than lived in.
The new information reveals that the monsters in the show didn’t actually begin in the Upside Down. Vecna, the Mind Flayer, and their creatures all came from a place called the Abyss and used the Upside Down as a pathway to reach Hawkins. Essentially, the Upside Down was just a stopover point they used to travel to our world through various openings and gates.
The Duffer Brothers recently told Variety that the alternate dimension in their show wasn’t originally called ‘The Abyss.’ They had initially referred to it as ‘Dimension X,’ a nod to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They also revealed that the character Eleven was the key to unlocking this other world.
