Stranger Things Series Finale & Eleven’s Potential Fate Addressed By Duffer Brothers Following Startling Pact With Kali

In the upcoming finale of the series, creators Matt and Ross Duffer have hinted at a possible sacrifice for Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). After it was revealed that Dr. Kay (Linda Hamilton) was using Kali’s (Linnea Berthelsen) blood to create more children with superpowers, Eleven and Kali, also known as Eight, appeared to silently agree that they would stop Dr. Kay even if it meant sacrificing themselves.

The Duffer Brothers haven’t said whether Eleven and Kali will actually go through with their plan, but they hinted to TV Insider that Kali’s willingness to sacrifice herself will significantly affect future events. Here’s what Matt Duffer had to say:

We were fascinated by questions surrounding Eleven – her life, her future, and what would ultimately happen to her, and that was a major focus during our writing sessions. That’s why we decided to reintroduce Kali; she offers a very practical and grounded perspective on things.

Kali’s practical approach and willingness to risk everything – including Eleven – to stop Dr. Kay has understandably caused tension with Hopper (David Harbour). This is especially true considering Hopper has also been prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice this season. According to Matt, “Hopper is right to be cautious of her.”

As a big fan, I’ve always found the contrast between characters like Kali and Hopper and Finn Wolfhard’s Mike really compelling. While Kali and Hopper were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice, Mike was desperately trying to show Eleven that they could have a good life together. Ironically, it was the danger Mike was in that finally convinced Eleven to even consider Kali’s plan, which involved a huge sacrifice on Eleven’s part.

According to Ross Duffer, Mike is the most hopeful and imaginative of the three characters. Eleven finds herself caught between these differing perspectives.

As a huge Stranger Things fan, I was thrilled to hear the Duffer Brothers talk about the season 5 finale. They’re being pretty tight-lipped, naturally, but they did hint it was a massive undertaking. Matt Duffer said he doesn’t want to give too much away, but emphasized that, in terms of sheer scale, it’s the biggest thing they’ve ever done. I’m already counting down the days to see it – knowing it’s that ambitious is incredibly exciting!

Following the revelation that the Upside Down is a gateway to another dimension called The Abyss, the creators of the show have hinted at a massive finale. Vecna (played by Jamie Campbell Bower) intends to crash these two dimensions together, which would be catastrophic for Earth, promising an epic conclusion to the series.

The season finale is two hours and five minutes long, making it the longest episode of the fifth season. This extended finale will likely show Eleven, Will (who now has superpowers too), and the rest of the Stranger Things characters carrying out their plan to destroy the Upside Down and close the connection between our world and that dimension.

The season finale will be full of exciting action and impressive visuals, but Matt hints it will also be the most emotionally resonant episode, with a strong focus on character development. He feels this combination of spectacle and heartfelt moments makes for a particularly strong conclusion.

Ross explains that creating this season’s big finale required a different strategy for episode 7. He says they intentionally laid out the entire plan in the second-to-last episode, unlike previous finales which built tension more gradually towards a climax.

The seventh episode of Stranger Things season 5 focuses on setting up future events and making plans, but the season finale will be much faster-paced. According to the creators, the eighth episode jumps right into action, and they’re very enthusiastic about it.

It’s still unclear how the story of Stranger Things will end, but Eleven will definitely be a central figure in the finale. The last episode will be available on Netflix at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, December 31st.
