Stranger Things Season 5 Vol 1: No Deaths, But Why? Duffer Brothers Explain

Be warned, this contains spoilers for the first part of Stranger Things season 5! Over its run, the Netflix sci-fi show Stranger Things hasn’t shied away from heartbreaking moments and character deaths. However, the creators, the Duffer Brothers, recently explained why they chose not to kill off any major characters in Volume 1 and their reasoning behind that decision.

In an interview with Variety, creators Matt and Ross Duffer discussed the events of the first volume of the latest season, including their decision to avoid killing off any major characters early on. Many viewers believed Ted Wheeler and his wife, Karen, parents of Mike, Nancy, and Holly, wouldn’t survive, but Ross Duffer explained why they chose a different path.

As a huge fan, I remember when the creators decided they wanted to explore Will’s powers this season, it became clear how Volume 1 had to end. It was a real emotional rollercoaster – the worst moment was definitely seeing all the kids get taken by Vecna, but the silver lining was seeing Will discover he had these incredible abilities. That balance – the really low point with the kids, and then Will’s powers emerging – was something they talked about a lot, and it really drove the finale of Volume 1.

Matt confirms whether Volume 2 of season 5 will get deadlier or perhaps bloodier:

I’ve mentioned this before: this show isn’t trying to be “Game of Thrones.” I’m hoping it will pleasantly surprise viewers, but it won’t have shocking, tragic events like the Red Wedding – that would just be too bleak.

Lately, people have been frequently comparing new shows to Game of Thrones because, despite being incredibly popular, its ending was widely considered disappointing. Like with many TV series, fans often anticipate finales with a mix of excitement and anxiety, worried they won’t live up to expectations and will leave viewers feeling unsatisfied.

The creators of the show, the Duffer Brothers, have repeatedly promised fans they’re learning from the issues that plagued the final season of Game of Thrones. They’ve stated that all questions and loose ends, including the mystery of the Upside Down, will be answered. In a recent interview with The Times, they also revealed that while this season isn’t as action-packed overall, it features the show’s most shocking death.

Even though the latest season caused Netflix to temporarily go down, the first part of the season has received the lowest ratings from critics so far on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans are hopeful about what will happen next for the characters in Hawkins and whether they can finally overcome the villain, Vecna, but they’re also approaching with some caution.

The final season of Stranger Things will conclude with Volume 2 premiering on December 25th, followed by the very last episodes on December 31st, available on Netflix and in some cinemas.
