Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Stranger Things season 5, Volume 1
The first part of Stranger Things season 5 has arrived, and it’s packed with big surprises and unanswered questions. It’s clear the show is holding back its biggest twists for the final episodes and the series finale.
With the release of Volume 2 just around the corner this Christmas, fans are buzzing with theories about what might happen. Here are seven of the most popular and intriguing predictions for the final season of Stranger Things.
Stranger Things Season 5 Is Building A Critical Roll
As a huge movie and TV fan, I’ve always noticed the Dungeons & Dragons influence in Stranger Things, right from the beginning. And honestly, with the characters developing superpowers in season 5, it’s really cool to think there’s some interesting mathematical patterns behind it all.
Eleven and Eight add up to nineteen. But with Will joining them, seemingly using powers similar to Vecna’s, the total becomes twenty – a perfect roll, like a natural 20 in Dungeons & Dragons. This suggests that by combining their abilities, they might finally be strong enough to defeat Vecna, as they now have the necessary strengths to succeed.
Vecna Is Building A Wormhole To Travel Through Time
Mr. Clarke’s science lessons often hint at things to come, and his recent lecture was a perfect example. He showed a diagram of an Einstein-Rosen bridge while discussing theoretical wormholes, and it looked remarkably similar to a drawing Will made of Vecna’s new hideout, where the kidnapped children are being held. It seems too much of a coincidence to be random!
If Vecna is messing with time and space, it makes you wonder what his goal is. Is he trying to prevent Eleven from getting her powers? Erase the history of Brenner’s experiments? Or even stop himself from becoming Vecna? There are many dangerous possibilities to consider.
Vecna Still Has Major Plans For Will Byers
As a huge Stranger Things fan, I’ve been thinking a lot about that opening flashback in season 5 – it really hit me that Vecna was messing with Will’s head way back in season 1, even before we knew who he was! It’s become clear their connection is deeper and stronger than anything we’ve seen with other characters. And now, seeing Will actually use Vecna’s powers? It all makes sense – it’s gotta be because of that original, intense link they share.
The biggest concern right now is that Will might still be a key part of Vecna’s overall plan. Vecna could be using Will as a weapon, similar to how the Mind Flayer tried to use him before. It would be devastating if Will ended up betraying his friends, but the evidence increasingly suggests that’s a possibility.
The Cult of Vecna Will Rise In Volume Two
Season 4 of Stranger Things hinted at a group called “The Cult of Vecna” through Eddie Munson’s Hellfire Club. It now seems likely that Season 5 will actually show this cult forming, using the children Vecna has kidnapped and trapped in his mental world. These kids are probably being turned into followers—or used as a power source—to make Vecna even stronger.
The Mind Flayer Is Stranger Things Season 5’s True Big Bad
Vecna seemed to be the main villain in season 4 of Stranger Things. However, a bigger threat might be controlling him. The Mind Flayer has been unusually silent, and that quietness could be a deliberate tactic.
As a huge fan of the show, my take on Vecna is that he’s basically the Darth Vader of Stranger Things. He’s clearly trying to either help the Mind Flayer or even take over as the main villain controlling the Upside Down. Honestly, I wouldn’t be shocked if the Mind Flayer comes back to be the real big bad in the second half of season 5 – the ultimate boss we’re all waiting for.
Max Sacrifices Herself To Save The Kids
As a film and book nerd, I’m already hooked by the episode titles in this season, especially the first one in Volume 2, “Escape From Camazotz.” That name immediately jumped out at me because Camazotz is this really creepy, unsettling place from A Wrinkle in Time. It’s brilliant, actually – knowing Holly loves that book, it totally makes sense that Vecna’s mindscape would be named after it. It adds a whole other layer to things!
Max Mayfield narrowly survived a deadly encounter at the end of Stranger Things season 4, but she’s now trapped in a catatonic state within Vecna’s mind, along with other captured children. Given this situation, it seems sadly plausible that Max might sacrifice herself to save her friends.
Hopper Survives (And Becomes Police Chief Again)
New photos from the set show Hopper wearing his police chief uniform again in the fifth season of Stranger Things, which is exciting news for fans. He hasn’t been in uniform or working as police chief since season 3, when he was captured in Russia.
We see Hopper chatting with Mike Wheeler outside the Hawkins theater, where they’re showing Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade from 1989. Because the movie came out in 1989, this scene likely takes place after the main events of the show, not in the past. This suggests we’re seeing what happens to at least two of our favorite characters in the future.
The final part of Stranger Things season 5 will be available on Netflix starting Christmas Day, with the very last episode arriving on New Year’s Eve.
