Stranger Things Season 5: Netflix Rejects Duffer Brothers’ Unique Release Plan

The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, suggested a unique release plan for the show’s final season, but Netflix decided against it. Season 5, which will conclude the popular series, was originally planned to be released in three parts, on November 26th, December 25th, and December 31st.

Originally, the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer brothers, wanted the final season to be released one episode at a time each week, similar to traditional TV. But Netflix decided to release it differently, despite the showrunners’ preference, according to a report in The Ankler.

I was really excited about a plan they were thinking about – releasing each episode of the show on different nights, one after the other. It would have been a totally new way to do things, and The Ankler pointed out it would have definitely gotten everyone in Hollywood talking!

Rather than releasing everything at once, Netflix decided to release the new season in two parts, similar to how they did with season 4 of Stranger Things. The two parts were released a month apart.

For its first three seasons, Stranger Things followed Netflix’s now-common practice of releasing all episodes at the same time, allowing viewers to watch a whole season in one go. This is a method Netflix helped make popular with streaming TV.

The final season of Stranger Things will release its episodes in batches around major holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. Episodes will either drop on the holiday itself or the day before.

The show will release in three parts. The first four episodes will be available on November 26th, followed by three more on December 25th, and the final episode on December 31st. All episodes will become available at 8 p.m. Eastern Time / 5 p.m. Pacific Time on their respective release dates.

Beyond being released on Christmas Day, these episodes will coincide with a special event on Netflix: a live stream of two NFL games. The Dallas Cowboys will play the Washington Commanders at 1 p.m. Eastern Time / 10 a.m. Pacific Time, followed by the Detroit Lions versus the Minnesota Vikings at 4:30 p.m. Eastern / 1:30 p.m. Pacific.

After these two games finish, the fifth season of Stranger Things will be released on Netflix. Netflix will likely use the games as an opportunity to advertise the new season.

As a longtime TV watcher, the way the Duffer Brothers are releasing Stranger Things – one episode a week – doesn’t feel revolutionary to me. Honestly, that’s how we always watched TV – back in the days of broadcast and cable. When streaming services like Netflix came along, they flipped the script and got us hooked on binge-watching, and then everyone else jumped on that bandwagon. It’s interesting to see them move back to the older format now.

While some streaming platforms release episodes weekly, Netflix continues to favor a traditional TV approach. They haven’t moved away from releasing entire seasons at once, though they sometimes divide them into smaller groups of episodes released over several weeks.

Recently, the approach of dividing a season into multiple parts has faced criticism, especially after the release of Wednesday season 2. Now, Stranger Things season 5 is also being released in two volumes, though the final part—the series finale—will be released on a different date.

Because this is the last season, releasing episodes over a longer period will give viewers time to discuss predictions and get ready for the series finale.

The stars of Stranger Things – Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, and Sadie Sink – have become very well-known, and people everywhere love their characters.

As a huge fan, I can’t believe Stranger Things season 5 is actually happening – it really does feel like the end of an era. Honestly, the wait for the final season is almost unbearable, and I’m so hyped to see how everything wraps up!

Stranger Things season 5 premieres Wednesday, November 26 at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PST on Netflix.
