Stranger Things’ New Season 5 Trailer Has Tons Of Dead Bodies And Freddie Mercury, But Vecna And Will’s Big Moment Has Me The Most Hyped

Stop what you’re doing – unless you’re in a situation where stopping would be dangerous or messy – and check out the exciting new preview of…

The fifth and final season of Stranger Things is here, and it looks like the show will end with a lot of characters dying in and around Hawkins, Indiana. Let’s hope our favorite heroes survive—though, realistically, some tears are probably guaranteed when the series concludes.

If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, watch it now! Everything discussed below will be much clearer if you do. Now that’s covered, let’s analyze this preview for what might be the biggest horror TV show coming out soon, paying special attention to the intense, unresolved confrontation between Vecna and Will Byers.

The Song Choice; Queen’s “Who Wants To Live Forever?”

There’s nothing quite like a powerful Queen song to make fighting monsters and rescuing friends even more exciting. Freddie Mercury’s incredible voice could brighten up even the darkest places, like the Upside Down. While the song originally came out in 1986, it’s clear the creators of the show couldn’t resist using its meaningful lyrics.

Hawkins Is Surrounded, Which Just Makes For A Bigger Body Count

The trailer shows Hawkins is now surrounded by a government-controlled border, but it’s unlikely to actually keep anything from entering or escaping. Vecna clearly isn’t bothered by a simple barricade, as demonstrated in the latter part of the trailer. He rampages through a military outpost, leaving a trail of dead soldiers in his wake.

The Requisite D&D Reference

For the younger characters, Dungeons & Dragons has always been a reliable source of fun and comfort, but Eleven points out to Mike that this last fight is much more serious and real than any game they’ve played with dice or imagined with a Dungeon Master.

This isn’t like one of your campaigns. You don’t get to write the ending. Not this time.

I bet Mike still finds a way to influence the ending as if he was writing it.

Dustin And Steve’s Tearful Hug

The emotion on Gaten Matarazzo’s face during his hug with Steve was incredibly powerful. It looked like something terrible had just happened – almost like they’d found out Eddie Munson was alive, only to lose him again. While the creators have indicated Eddie’s fate is sealed, that’s what the scene felt like.

Eleven’s Powers

With this being the last season, fans are finally getting to see Eleven truly master her abilities. The creators have likened her power to the Force in Star Wars. We get a glimpse of this early on when Millie Bobby Brown’s character jumps, appearing to almost fly rather than simply long-jump. Later, she unleashes a blast of energy powerful enough to potentially destroy a whole city. While the editing in those moments might change before the final release, I’m hoping all that impressive energy comes from Eleven.

Uh Oh, Lucas

It’s odd for a final-season trailer, but we don’t see the main characters in much immediate danger, despite knowing trouble is coming. One notable shot shows Lucas looking very anxious while something from the Upside Down gets closer. While I don’t think anything seriously harmful will happen to him, it’s strange that he’s alone in that situation.

Nancy Is In Beast Mode

Wouldn’t it be amazing if a Stranger Things spin-off focused on Natalia Dyer’s Nancy Wheeler as a total action hero? Imagine her traveling the country, fighting villains, and generally being awesome. She’s already proven she can handle intense situations – remember the flamethrower? – and now she seems to be taking inspiration from Linda Hamilton’s legendary Sarah Connor.

What Is Vecna Going To Do To Will?

The trailer begins and ends with the chilling, gravelly voice of the vine-covered monster. This time, however, we see that Vecna has captured Will Byers, played by Noah Schnapp, and appears to have complete control over him, as he says…

William, you are going to help me. One. Last. Time.

It feels like Will’s been stuck doing Vecna’s bidding all summer, which isn’t really ‘helping’ when someone is being forced. Honestly, after five seasons, I’m still not sure what Vecna’s plan is for Will, or how dangerous this situation is for him, both physically and emotionally. It clearly isn’t good, otherwise Will wouldn’t be there against his wishes.

Will the Byers family finally be broken apart by Vecna’s last attack, or will Eleven and her friends manage to save Will, Hawkins, and the world from complete destruction? We have so many unanswered questions, and a long wait ahead to find out what happens.

The first part of Stranger Things Season 5 will be available starting November 26th. The remaining episodes will be released on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.
