The first episode of the final season of Netflix’s hit show, Stranger Things, immediately feels like a decline in quality.

Anyone who watches Stranger Things knows the Demogorgon is a seriously dangerous creature. It’s been a threat since the beginning of the show, and it can defeat almost anyone with its incredible strength, sharp teeth, and other powers. No matter what weapons you have, it’s extremely unlikely you’d survive an encounter with a Demogorgon.

Unless you’re Mrs. Wheeler, that is.

What happens in the Stranger Things Season 5 Mrs. Wheeler scene?

In the season five premiere of Stranger Things, the villain Vecna dispatches a Demogorgon to the Wheeler home with the intent of abducting Holly. Karen Wheeler (Cara Buono), after a difficult night and having consumed some wine, bravely attempts to protect her daughter when the creature attacks. The scene shows Karen fighting off the Demogorgon using only a wine bottle. Though she’s seriously injured, and Holly is ultimately kidnapped, the moment has sparked debate among fans, as Demogorgons are typically portrayed as overwhelmingly powerful.

Many Stranger Things fans were surprised that Mrs. Wheeler survived the Demogorgon attack, pointing out that the creatures have easily killed more powerful characters before. Some believe her survival felt forced – like she had ‘plot armor’ – and that it weakened the Demogorgons, making them seem less threatening.

Looking at it from another angle, the Demogorgon was sent to the Wheelers’ house specifically to take Holly, suggesting it wasn’t initially there to hurt anyone. However, Demogorgons are wild creatures, and its sudden pause to allow Mrs. Wheeler to speak feels a bit out of character compared to how they’ve behaved in past seasons of Stranger Things.

The fifth and final season of Stranger Things is now streaming on Netflix, with the first four episodes available now. The next three episodes will be released on December 25th, and the final two episodes will conclude the series on December 31st.
