The first season of Stranger Things focused on the vanishing of Will Byers, and introduced viewers to both the Demogorgon and the Upside Down – a strange, mirrored version of the town of Hawkins. The series reveals that experiments at Hawkins Lab accidentally opened a gateway between our world and the Upside Down, letting the Demogorgon into Hawkins. The lab is responsible for Will’s disappearance and tries to cover it up by staging a fake death.

Initially, everyone believed the Demogorgon kidnapped Will. But looking back at Season 1, especially after what happened in Season 4, changes how you see things. The very first episode, “Chapter One: The Vanishing of Will Byers,” shows Will and his friends – Mike, Dustin, and Lucas – playing Dungeons & Dragons in Mike’s basement. When the game ends, they all head home, and Will chooses a quiet backroad to bike home on.

In the final moments of episode 4, titled “Will the Wise,” Hopper bravely enters the Upside Down by digging into the pumpkin patch. Unlike last season, the scene isn’t subtle: the camera spins around completely as a loud ringing sound plays and the screen goes black.

The camera’s full rotation resembles a clock, with the character Hopper at the center, like the clock’s spindle. Combined with a very clear and intentional chime – more noticeable than before – viewers now see this moment as an early signal that something significant is about to happen.

The Clock Chimes Aren’t As Subtle in Stranger Things Season 3

The mysterious clock chimes that foreshadow events in Season 4 actually first appear at the start of Season 3, Episode 2. After being pulled into the steel mill, the character finds a phone booth and tries to call for help, but the call is cut off. He quickly realizes he’s no longer in Hawkins. This time, the clues are much more obvious than in the first two seasons. Looking back, the increasing use of chimes seems like a clear signal pointing to Vecna. The creators have consistently stated they knew the ending from the start and were building towards it, meaning Vecna was always meant to be the source of the Upside Down and its monsters.

The creators have confessed to tweaking some episodes to improve the storyline, but the original versions on YouTube still include these sound cues as they first appeared. These sounds were present throughout the show from the start, but no one paid attention to them until Season 4. Other Vecna Clues Are Hidden Throughout the Show

This initially suggested Dr. Brenner had experimented on multiple subjects before Eleven. In Season 3, episode 4, there’s another hint about Vecna’s powers. When the kids try to help Billy by using heat to remove the Mind Flayer’s influence, it doesn’t work. Instead, Billy taps into the Mind Flayer’s energy and breaks free, but his movements are strange – he’s pulled upwards as if by an invisible force. This shows Vecna subtly controlling him using telekinesis.

We now know Vecna was the mastermind behind all the events in the series, but it’s unclear if the Duffer Brothers intentionally planted every clue. They’ve said they planned the ending years ago, but Stranger Things was initially conceived as a one-season story. This means some details might have been added later to fit the bigger picture, and others could simply be happy accidents.
