The fifth and final season is coming soon, and the official trailer has fans incredibly excited. It’s been three years since the last season, giving viewers lots of time to wonder about unanswered questions from Season 4. That season revealed a lot about the villains and their connection to Hawkins and its residents, while also introducing new mysteries about the Upside Down – specifically, that it seems stuck in time on the day Will Byers vanished, November 6, 1983. Fans have been developing theories about why this is and how it relates to Will, and the new trailer suggests one of those popular theories might be correct.
Ever since Will Byers was taken to the Upside Down in the first season of Stranger Things, he’s been deeply connected to it. Because the Upside Down appears as Hawkins did when Will first arrived, some viewers think Will might unknowingly have the ability to alter the dimension. They believe he accidentally transformed it into a reflection of his hometown while trying to escape the demogorgon. This leads some to speculate that the main villain of the show is connected to Will’s powers. Fans have been discussing this idea for three years, and recent shots in the new trailer seem to provide some evidence supporting it.
Stranger Things Fans Believe Will Created the Upside Down
Season 4 of Stranger Things not only showed that time is frozen in the Upside Down, but also revealed details about its origins through Vecna’s backstory. In Episode 7, we learn that Eleven sent Vecna (formerly Henry Creel) to another dimension back in 1979. This dimension, seen in concept art and the prequel play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, shared many similarities with the Upside Down – it featured red lightning, demogorgons, and the raw material that would become the Mind Flayer. It’s currently unknown whether this dimension, called Dimension X, became the Upside Down, or if the Upside Down exists alongside or inside it. However, it’s clear the Upside Down wasn’t always as it appears, meaning someone or something must have created it.
Vecna considers Dimension X a pristine, untouched realm, making it unlikely he’d recreate a place like Hawkins. Some initially thought Eleven opened the gate to the Upside Down in 1983, but she was held captive in a lab beforehand, so that doesn’t quite add up. It’s more probable that Will Byers created the Upside Down. Unlike Vecna and Eleven, Hawkins is Will’s home, and when he was trying to escape the monsters, it’s natural he’d subconsciously recreate a familiar, safe place like his hometown.
As a huge fan of Stranger Things, I’ve been pondering a bit of a plot hole from Season 4, and I think I’ve stumbled onto a possible explanation. It always bothered me that Will was able to communicate with his mom using the alphabet board – she didn’t actually paint that until after he vanished! If the Upside Down is supposed to mirror our world in real-time, he shouldn’t have even known about it. But what if Will actually has the power to change the Upside Down? Maybe his connection with Joyce was so strong that, subconsciously, he somehow created the alphabet board there himself, allowing them to communicate. That would set his abilities apart from Eleven and Vecna, and honestly, it could make him a really valuable asset to the villain if he ever switched sides. It’s a cool thought, and it could tie everything together nicely!
The Duffer Brothers Hint That Will’s Disappearance Wasn’t Random
The creators of Stranger Things have promised that Season 5 will finally answer two long-standing mysteries: where Eleven’s powers came from, and why Will Byers was originally kidnapped. While fans have wondered about Eleven’s abilities for years, the reason for Will’s abduction is actually much more significant. Initially, it appeared Will was simply a random victim of the Demogorgon, caught while playing in the woods. However, the creators hint that Will was specifically chosen, not taken by chance. Season 4 revealed that the villain Vecna has been connected to the Demogorgon and the Mind Flayer since the beginning, using them to get revenge on Eleven. This has led to theories that Vecna was also responsible for Will’s kidnapping, possibly because he sensed Will had hidden powers.
Even though we haven’t directly seen Vecna use his powers on Will yet, clues suggest he was involved in the events of Stranger Things Season 1. As a leader within the hive mind, Vecna could have ordered the demogorgon to capture Will. Or, he might have even gone after Will himself, which would explain how the door to the Byers’ house was opened – demogorgons can’t use telekinesis. This could also explain why the demogorgon didn’t kill Will, but instead kept him alive, possibly because Vecna wanted to exploit his abilities. Some fans believe Will unintentionally shielded himself from Vecna in the Upside Down by singing “Should I Stay or Should I Go,” similar to how Max defended herself from Vecna’s powers with music in Season 4. Unlike the mindless demogorgons, Vecna is intelligent and targets people for a reason, so his continued interest in Will likely points to a larger plan.
Stranger Things’ Season 5 Trailer Suggests That Fans Are Onto Something
The recent trailer doesn’t show Will using any powers, but it does include scenes that hint at a deeper connection to Vecna. The trailer opens with Vecna and a Demogorgon in the Upside Down version of the Hawkins library – the same place the Demogorgon took people in Season 1. Notably, Vecna doesn’t have the body modifications he received in the Season 4 finale, leading fans to believe this is a flashback. Some theorize the scene shows the Demogorgon bringing Will to Vecna. There’s also a close-up of Vecna’s hand reaching towards something on the floor, which many believe could be Will after being captured by the Demogorgon in Season 1.
The trailer culminates in a tense confrontation between Will and Vecna. After a demogorgon attacks a military facility, injuring Will, Joyce, and Mike, Vecna appears and levitates Will, ominously stating he needs one final favor. This likely refers to Will’s previous role as a pawn for the Mind Flayer, but with the Upside Down creatures now openly attacking Hawkins, Vecna may no longer need a spy. Many believe Vecna intends to possess Will’s body and control him, which would explain Vecna’s need for secrecy from Eleven. Using Will as a hostage would also give Vecna leverage against the heroes. Alternatively, Vecna may simply be powerful enough to directly confront his enemies. It’s clear Vecna wants to bring the Upside Down to Hawkins, but he may require more power to do so, and Will’s ability to influence the Upside Down could be crucial to Vecna’s overall plan.
Will will definitely be a central figure in the final season of Stranger Things, regardless of whether he develops powers. The Duffer Brothers have explained that the story began with his disappearance, so it makes sense for it to conclude with him as well. Fans are hoping for a positive resolution for Will, considering all he’s experienced.
