The creators of Netflix’s *Stranger Things*, brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, originally hoped to release the show’s final episodes in movie theaters, but that plan likely won’t come to fruition.
The popular show Stranger Things will be back for its last season later this year. The season will be released in three parts: the first two will be available next month, and the final part will come out in December.
Why won’t the Stranger Things finale play in movie theaters?
Matt recently told Variety that the final episode of Stranger Things will be approximately two hours long.
As a huge fan of Stranger Things, I was really excited to hear the Duffer brothers were considering a theatrical release for the final season. With how long the episodes are and the massive following the show has, it makes sense! It’s a bit unusual for Netflix, since they usually just drop everything directly onto the streaming platform, but I think it could be an amazing experience for fans on the big screen.
Despite recent challenges, the KPop Demon Hunters sing-along film did well in theaters earlier this year. Plus, Greta Gerwig’s new movie, The Chronicles of Narnia, scheduled for 2026, will be released in IMAX.
Matt explained that viewers often don’t realize the significant time and effort dedicated to the quality of sound and visuals, and they’re usually watching a compressed version. He emphasized that a key part of the experience is sharing it live with other fans.
Even so, Netflix’s head of creative, Bela Bajaria, believes the final season of Stranger Things will work well on the streaming service.
According to Netflix’s Bela Bajaria, *Stranger Things* has been incredibly popular, with a huge number of viewers. Despite the show’s popularity, releasing it on Netflix hasn’t diminished fan engagement, conversation, or the sense of community around the series – it’s delivering what fans want.
The fifth and final season of Stranger Things will be released in three parts. The first part arrives on November 26th, the second on December 25th, and the third and final part on December 31st.
