Now that the final episode of Stranger Things Season 5 has aired, the show’s creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, are hinting at a new spin-off series. They’ve shared some intriguing, though mysterious, information about the project, and have also confirmed that a popular fan guess about where it will take place is incorrect.

What did the Duffer Brothers say about the Stranger Things spin-off?

When asked if the final season of Stranger Things teased the upcoming spin-off, Ross Duffer addressed fan speculation. He confirmed it wasn’t related to Hopper’s past and stated definitively, “There’s no Montauk spin-off.”

Ross clarified that the mention was a deliberate nod to longtime viewers. He explained it was a reference to the show’s original setting of Montauk, and emphasized it wasn’t a hint about the direction of the new story. He also confirmed the new project wouldn’t feature the original characters, like Holly and her children.

Ross Duffer explained that the planned Stranger Things spin-off will be much more focused and self-contained than the original series. He described it as a completely new story with its own unique background and rules, though it will still take place within the same universe. While the project is still in the early stages of development, it’s meant to stand on its own as a separate narrative.

I was really intrigued when the Duffer Brothers talked about that strange rock in the finale, and Matt Duffer confirmed my suspicions to Variety – they definitely left it as a hint for a spin-off! He basically admitted they were setting something up. He said the new series will directly address that rock and explain what it is – we’re finally going to get some answers! It’s not going to focus on the Mind Flayer again, though. It’s a completely new story, but it will tie up some of those loose ends we’ve been wondering about.

The creators, the Duffer brothers, have confirmed they’re starting work on a new project related to the ‘Stranger Things’ universe next week. While the main story in Hawkins has finished, they’re already developing a spin-off series with a completely different story and set of rules.
