In 2022, the creators of the show, Matt and Ross Duffer, announced they would be working on an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, The Talisman. However, Netflix is no longer involved in the project.
Ross Duffer revealed, “Sadly, Talisman is no longer at Netflix, so we’re not involved.”
You know, listening to Matt talk about it, he admitted we were probably a little naive back then. He was remembering when we first thought we could actually destroy The Talisman. It just sounded like we didn’t really understand what we were up against!
You know, I was a huge fan of the Talisman project even way back when! I remember Ross mentioning he read a script for it during his internship at Kennedy Marshall when he was in college. It’s been stuck in development for ages, and he seemed genuinely bummed that their team wasn’t the one to finally get it made. It’s a shame, honestly!
Matt added, “It will be whoever does it and cracks it.”
In 1984, Stephen King and Peter Straub co-authored the fantasy novel The Talisman. The story centers on Jack Sawyer, a young man on a dangerous journey through a strange parallel world known as the Territories. He’s searching for a magical artifact, the Talisman, which is the only hope for saving his mother’s life.
In 2001, King and Hill reunited to write a follow-up novel, Black House. This time, the story focuses on Jack Sawyer, now a retired detective in Los Angeles, who has completely forgotten his experiences in the Territories.
A short film version of The Talisman came out in 2008, followed by a graphic novel in October 2009. While a full-length movie has been planned for many years, the Duffer Brothers have indicated it won’t be made anytime soon.
The Stranger Things Franchise Continues
Even though the creators, the Duffer Brothers, plan to work on other projects, Netflix still owns the rights to the Stranger Things universe and will keep developing it. They already have two things in the works: a stage play that expands on the backstory of Henry Creel, and another recently announced project.
