Following the recent finale of their popular Netflix series, which premiered in 2016 and ran for five seasons, creators Matt and Ross Duffer have discussed the possibility of a 10-year reunion special.
The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, insist that the recent finale truly concludes the show’s story, and they don’t foresee any future reunion episodes. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, they explained that they always envisioned Stranger Things as a coming-of-age tale, and they don’t find revisiting these characters as adults particularly interesting. Here’s what Matt Duffer had to say about it:
Honestly, we don’t know if there will be more. The way Mike closes the basement door, and the closing credits themselves, were meant to signal a definite end. We wanted to emphasize that this is where the story finishes – for Mike, Eleven, Joyce, Hopper, and everyone. There aren’t any plans to continue the narrative because, at its heart, this has always been a coming-of-age story, and that’s how it was meant to conclude.
Going down to the basement feels like leaving childhood behind and stepping into adulthood. A story about a midlife crisis? Honestly, that just doesn’t sound very appealing. (Laughs) And revisiting Grandpa Hopper? It would just come across as a cynical attempt to make more money, in my opinion.
Although the main characters we’ve followed in Stranger Things likely won’t be part of future stories after the series ends, the creators, the Duffer brothers, hint that the essence of the show will live on in a new spinoff. This new series will tell a completely different story with a fresh set of characters.
I can’t share many details about the planned spinoff just yet. However, Ross and I are thrilled about the possibility of introducing new characters and a fresh storyline, while still maintaining the feel of Stranger Things. We feel that we’ve wrapped up the story we wanted to tell about these characters and the world of the Upside Down with this final season.
Matt Duffer has suggested the main story of Stranger Things is likely finished, but that doesn’t rule out a future reunion special. Instead of continuing the story with new episodes, a special could be similar to the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, focusing on the cast and creators reminiscing about the show.

The special, which aired in 2022, brought together the original stars of the Harry Potter films – including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint – to share memories of making the movies. While very different from Stranger Things – one being a film series and the other a streaming show – it’s something fans might enjoy.
The new series Duffer is talking about isn’t the same as Stranger Things: Tales from ’85. That upcoming animated show will bring back the main characters from Hawkins in a story set between seasons two and three, but it will feature a different cast providing the voices.
Another live-action series is in the works, but details about its characters, setting, and timeline are still a secret. The creators, the Duffer Brothers, recently told ScreenRant that this new show will tell a brand new story with a completely separate cast and location, meaning viewers shouldn’t anticipate many connections to the original series.
The final episode of Stranger Things appears to wrap up the story for the hugely popular Netflix series. Although a live-action spin-off is planned, it sounds like it will be quite different from the original show.
