The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, have revealed why Henry Creel (Vecna) couldn’t reach Max in her mental space in the first part of the final season. It all comes down to his biggest fear. Now streaming on Netflix, these new episodes delve deeper into Vecna’s backstory and how he tries to get revenge on the Hawkins group after their victory in Season 4. Vecna is kidnapping children because he thinks they can help him achieve his goal of world domination.
Vecna targeted Holly Wheeler, the younger sister of Mike and Nancy, and had his Demogorgons abduct her from the Wheeler home, seriously injuring their parents. It was revealed that while Holly’s physical body was held in a strange tower in the Upside Down, she was actually trapped within the mind of Henry Creel. In a surprising turn of events during episode 3, Max Mayfield was also shown to be inside this mental prison, and she shared a vital piece of information about Vecna that could be crucial to finally defeating him.

It’s been revealed that Max has been trapped in Vecna’s mind-prison in Stranger Things Season 5, taking refuge in a cave. Interestingly, Henry (Vecna) seemed hesitant to enter this cave, suggesting it might exploit his biggest vulnerability.
In an interview with Variety, the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, revealed that the cave featured in Season 5 is the same one mentioned in the prequel play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow. This cave is where a young Henry Creel had his first experience with something related to the Upside Down, explaining his fear of it and linking it to a past trauma.
Ross Duffer even said, “It’s nice for us to start to tie those two together:”
Variety asked if the cave mentioned in ‘The First Shadow’ – a play now showing on Broadway and in London – is the same one where a young Henry Creel first experienced something linked to the Upside Down, near an army base in Nevada.
We actually developed Henry’s history while working on the stage play with Kate Trefry. The challenge was deciding how much of that backstory to include in the play itself. The director, Stephen Daldry, and producer, Sonia Friedman, wanted to reveal more, but we felt some details needed to be saved for the show. You’ll notice a lot more connection between the play and the series, especially in the final episode.
Ross Duffer explained that Max discovering the “Oklahoma” poster might confuse viewers unfamiliar with the play, leading them to wonder about Henry’s connection to it. However, he feels it’s a good way to begin linking Henry’s story to the events unfolding in the show.

Matt then let fans know that prior knowledge of the play isn’t necessary to follow the story of Henry Creel, suggesting the show will reveal more about his background as the season continues.
You don’t need to have seen the play to get it. These are just little references and inside jokes, really.
Those unfamiliar with the play Stranger Things: The First Shadow learn that when Henry Creel was eight years old, he disappeared for twelve hours near a Nevada military base. He was eventually found near a cave with no recollection of what had occurred. Later in the play, it’s revealed a Russian spy was found dead in the same cave, suggesting he was taken – and killed – in the Upside Down.
Putting all the clues together, it seems this cave was where Henry Creel first encountered the Upside Down and the Mind Flayer. This explains why he avoids entering – he doesn’t want to relive the terrible trauma he experienced there.
This is a key part of the story, and Max and Holly Wheeler (played by Nell Fisher) need to investigate further why Henry fears the cage. They might uncover more of Henry’s past, which could explain what made the cave so frightening originally.
I’m so excited for Stranger Things 5! It’s going to be the last season with all our favorite characters – David Harbour, Winona Ryder, Millie Bobby Brown, Sadie Sink, Finn Wolfhard, and the whole gang. From what I’ve heard, it’s going to be an epic showdown between everyone in Hawkins and Vecna, finally wrapping up the story with the Upside Down. The first part of Season 5 actually dropped on Netflix on November 26, 2025 – I’ve already marked my calendar!
Why the Cave Proved How Vulnerable Vecna Really Is in ‘Stranger Things’

The cave featured in Stranger Things: The First Shadow seems to represent Henry Creel’s deepest trauma, according to the Duffer Brothers. This helps audiences understand and even sympathize with Vecna’s origins.
When Max and Holly discover the truth about Henry’s past and his connection to the cave, they could use this knowledge to help them escape in Stranger Things Season 5. After escaping, they could share key details from Henry’s memories – like the cave system – with the rest of the Hawkins group, giving them an advantage in their final battle against Vecna.
The cave holds the key to Vecna’s painful past, and exploiting this connection might be their best shot at finally defeating him. The team could potentially trick Vecna into returning to the cave in Nevada, where memories suggest a gateway to the Upside Down is located. If they can lure him inside, Eleven and Will – who is developing intriguing new abilities – could strike when he’s at his weakest, ending his terror for good.
