When Anthony Mackie first took on the role of Captain America earlier this year, some Marvel fans weren’t convinced he could live up to Chris Evans’ portrayal of the character. Now, reports and blurry videos suggest Evans is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and many fans are expressing their disappointment.
Fans of Anthony Mackie are upset with the new Avengers movie, arguing it undoes a satisfying conclusion to Steve Rogers’ story and diminishes Sam Wilson’s role as Captain America. Many believe Chris Evans’ return will overshadow Mackie and re-center the focus on the original Captain America.
Following weeks of rumors, short previews for the upcoming Marvel film are beginning to appear in theaters with showings of Avatar: Fire & Ash. The first preview shows Chris Evans as Steve Rogers in the house briefly seen at the end of Avengers: Endgame, holding a baby boy. Despite more previews being planned, this initial teaser has already received significant criticism online.
Fans are frustrated with the casting choice for Avengers: Doomsday, arguing that Marvel selected a character whose story already concluded satisfyingly years ago. This follows previous criticism that the studio didn’t handle Sam Wilson’s portrayal as Captain America effectively, with many feeling he deserved a stronger storyline and shouldn’t be overshadowed by the previous Captain America.
Fans Could Be Looking at the ‘Doomsday’ Trailer All Wrong

Marvel Studios
The first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday does show Chris Evans back as Captain America, even briefly displaying his original suit. However, the trailer’s closing line makes it clear that we’re seeing the return of Steve Rogers, not necessarily the Captain America persona.
Currently, the only confirmed detail is that Steven Rogers will appear in the movie, but his specific role remains a mystery. Past rumors suggested he might play an alternate version of himself, perhaps one who worked with HYDRA. However, given the movie’s teaser and comments made earlier this year, it seems more likely that Rogers’ appearance will be brief, with Anthony Mackie’s Captain America taking center stage.
Honestly, I’ve been seeing some chatter about Steve Rogers showing up in Avengers: Doomsday, and whether it’ll take away from Sam Wilson’s time as Captain America. But I really don’t think it will. The Russo brothers were masters of misleading trailers with Infinity War and Endgame – remember that big group shot that wasn’t quite what we got, or characters being edited out of the Endgame trailers? They know how to keep secrets! And that’s a good thing. I, for one, don’t want everything spoiled. I want to go into the theater next December knowing as little as possible and just let the Multiverse Saga’s conclusion wash over me. Let’s be surprised, okay?
