Fans recently received disappointing news about a long-awaited adaptation of the author’s work. The project, which has been in development at Netflix with the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer brothers, aimed to tell a story connected to The Dark Tower. However, a recent announcement from the Duffers suggests that The Talisman will likely not be made into a TV show or movie, once again dashing hopes for a screen adaptation.
Lots of Stephen King stories are being adapted for film and TV right now, including recent books like Billy Summers and Fairy Tale, as well as classics like a new Carrie series from Mike Flanagan. But it appears a long-awaited adaptation of The Territories, following Jack Sawyer’s adventures, has stalled once again. Ross Duffer recently explained the situation to CBR, stating:
“Sadly, Talisman is no longer at Netflix, so we’re not involved.”
Matt Duffer added, “I think it was probably naive of us to think we could break The Talisman.”
As a huge movie and book fan, I’ve always thought The Talisman would be incredibly hard to adapt to the screen. It’s just so sprawling and epic! It’s been stuck in ‘development hell’ for ages, and Ross Duffer – one of the guys behind Stranger Things – recently talked about exactly why it’s proven so difficult.
I remember when I was an intern at Kennedy Marshall back in college, I stumbled across a script for ‘Talisman.’ It’s been a project floating around for ages, and honestly, I’m a little bummed my team didn’t end up being the ones to finally get it made.

Similar to The Dark Tower, Stephen King’s The Talisman has proven difficult to adapt into a film or series. Attempts began in 1982 when Steven Spielberg, through Amblin Entertainment, convinced Universal Pictures to acquire the rights to the novel. Spielberg was also involved in a failed 2006 miniseries project for TNT and was set to participate in the recent Netflix adaptation.

The Duffer Brothers recently mentioned that their project based on The Talisman is no longer with Netflix. Considering they’re now making a deal with Paramount Television Studios – the same studio involved in the project back in 2021 – it’s possible they could revisit it soon. Given the story of The Talisman shares several similarities with Stranger Things (especially between its Territories and the Upside Down), the Duffer Brothers’ involvement could either be a great asset or make the project feel too similar to their existing work.
