Stephen King is widely considered one of the most important horror writers of all time. However, as he’s gotten older, he’s also started writing in other genres, particularly crime and mystery. While these novels often include supernatural elements, many have been successfully adapted for television, including shows like Mister Mercedes, Big Driver, and the often-overlooked Haven.
While inspired by Stephen King’s 2005 novel The Colorado Kid, the TV series Haven isn’t a straightforward adaptation. Instead, it carries on the spirit of the book’s central mystery, but adds a significant supernatural twist – a phenomenon known as The Troubles. This gives Haven a feel closer to The X-Files than a classic detective show like The Rockford Files. And that’s actually a good thing! Many consider Haven an excellent, yet often overlooked, show – one of the best SyFy has ever created.
‘Haven’ Keeps the Spirit of ‘The Colorado Kid’ Alive
The TV series Haven began on July 9, 2010, and features Emily Rose as FBI Agent Audrey Parker. She’s sent to the town of Haven, Maine, to investigate the death of a prisoner who escaped. She teams up with Detective Nathan Wuornos, who is hiding a secret, and quickly discovers the prisoner was killed by a local woman named Marion Caldwell, who has supernatural powers.
Audrey becomes fascinated by the strange happenings in Haven after Vince and Dave Teagues, owners of the Haven Herald, show her an old newspaper clipping of a woman who bears a striking resemblance to her. Determined to uncover the truth, she begins investigating, discovering a connection to a decades-old case from 1983 involving a person known as the “Colorado Kid.” This leads her to make a surprising career change, leaving her job with the FBI to join the Haven Police Department.
As we’ve mentioned, the series Haven isn’t a direct retelling of The Colorado Kid. Instead, it aims to capture the feeling and themes of King’s novel. While the journalists from the book appear in the series, most of the characters are original. The Colorado Kid himself has a much more significant role than he did in the book, where he was simply found as a body on the beach. Despite these changes, the series remains true to the original story’s atmosphere and heart.
‘Haven’ Is a Series With a Surprising Amount of Heart
One of the most remarkable things about Haven – besides its impressive five-season run – is how genuinely heartwarming it is. Many shows focused on weekly cases prioritize the villain over character development, but Haven truly brings Audrey, Nathan, and Duke to life. They evolve into well-developed characters who learn to trust and rely on each other. Over time, we become invested in their relationships and genuinely care about their success, almost like they’re family.

What really sets Haven apart, though, are ‘The Troubles’ – these strange, supernatural events that aren’t just spooky, but surprisingly moving. They’re not some outside force affecting people; instead, they are the people – their inner turmoil made manifest. We’re talking about a guy whose house literally rains because of his sadness, or a man haunted by his fears taking shape through a child’s drawings. It’s brilliant because it makes you feel for these afflicted townsfolk. They aren’t just plot devices; they’re fully realized characters you genuinely care about, adding another layer of investment on top of the main storyline. It’s this emotional connection that truly elevates the show.
Haven is a show with a lot to offer – it’s engaging enough to follow for all 78 episodes. It features a well-developed storyline, interesting characters, and plenty of references for fans of Stephen King’s other work. If you haven’t discovered this hidden gem yet, you can stream all five seasons on Peacock, Prime Video, and Pluto TV.
