In 2017, Andy and Barbara Muschietti brought Stephen King’s novel It to the big screen, releasing the first of two planned movies. The second film followed shortly after. Six years later, they collaborated on a new series.
As a huge fan of Stephen King’s It, I was really captivated by the series. It not only uses the characters we know and love from the novel, but it dives much deeper into Pennywise’s backstory and the town of Derry itself. The eight-episode run was a big hit, taking place 27 years before the movies. And while we’ve been waiting to hear about Season 2 on HBO Max, Casey Bloys, the head of content, recently shared some positive news – it sounds like there’s still hope!
The first season of Welcome to Derry debuted in late October and concluded on December 14th. As of now, HBO hasn’t officially announced whether the show will be back. This is despite a strong finale that drew 6.5 million viewers in the US across HBO and HBO Max within its first three days, and nearly 20 million viewers worldwide. The series is currently one of the top three original shows on HBO Max, trailing only The Last of Us and House of the Dragon.
Bloys confirmed the show was a big hit. “It wasn’t stuck in development at all – quite the opposite, actually. It was a huge success for HBO,” he stated.
He said Andy and Barbara are currently brainstorming ideas for a potential new season of the show. He’s eager to participate, but it’s more difficult because they don’t have a source novel to adapt – they’re creating the story from scratch.
Bloys explained that the team is focused on developing a compelling story they’re passionate about. It’s not that the project is stalled, but they need to find a creative direction that excites them, and HBO will be ready to support them when they do.
Right after Season 1 ended, Barbara Muschietti, one of the show’s creators, mentioned HBO was definitely thinking about a second season. But she also pointed out that Season 1 was a really ambitious and expensive production – it wasn’t something they could just easily replicate, and they’d need to be sure any continuation lived up to the quality they’d already established.
The show’s success is something we don’t take for granted,” the co-creator said. “We’re all eager to continue – Stephen King, HBO, and ourselves – but we haven’t decided if and how we’ll move forward yet.
Recently, there was exciting news about the horror series based on Stephen King’s It, which Andy Muschietti, a co-creator of the first season, is expected to direct. Reports indicate a second season is being developed, even though it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. This aligns with what HBO’s content chief previously said – the show needs a solid story idea before production can begin.
When Will It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Premiere?
HBO hasn’t announced a second season yet, so we don’t know when it will be released. It might take a while, as the first season was announced in March 2022 but didn’t premiere for over three years. Fortunately, the creators, including Jason Fuchs, already have a plan for the story’s direction.
The series will have three seasons, each focusing on one of the major, devastating events from King’s book. The story unfolds in reverse chronological order, with season two set in 1935 and season three taking place in 1908.
Even if the show gets renewed quickly, filming probably won’t begin until later this year, with a potential release in 2027 or towards the end of that year.
It: Welcome to Derry is available to stream on HBO Max.
