Stephen King is impressed by Jason Statham’s newest action movie.
Stephen King is well-known as an author, but he also regularly shares his thoughts on books, movies, and TV shows created by others on social media. His recommendations often help these projects gain more attention. He’s previously reviewed popular titles like Netflix’s Stranger Things, FX’s Alien: Earth, the Netflix film A House of Dynamite directed by Kathryn Bigelow, and the horror series From on MGM+.
Stephen King recently shared his positive review of the action movie Shelter on his Bluesky account. Released in theaters on January 30th and now available to rent or buy online, King praised both the film’s action and its political message, calling it “the perfect antidote to Trump’s foolishness.”
In this film, Jason Statham plays Michael Mason, a retired government assassin who is pulled back into danger when he takes on the responsibility of protecting Jessie, a young girl dealing with the recent loss of her mother and the aftermath of a severe storm. They find themselves pursued by dangerous people from Mason’s past. The movie also stars Bill Nighy as Mason’s former boss, Manafort, Naomi Ackie as Manafort’s assistant Roberta, Daniel Mays as Mason’s friend Arthur, and Harriet Walter as the British Prime Minister.
A review in ScreenRant by Gregory Nussen points out that the movie Shelter initially shows potential for insightful political commentary, particularly regarding state surveillance and the inherent flaws of AI in such systems. However, Nussen notes this potential is quickly lost, and the film works best as a fast-paced action movie when it focuses on the action itself. Other critics generally agree, resulting in a 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences, however, seem to enjoy it more, giving it an 87% score.
While not as commercially successful as many of Jason Statham’s other action films – Shelter earned $42 million globally despite costing $50 million to make – the movie still resonated with many viewers. Positive reactions, including a strong review from Stephen King and a good audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, suggest people appreciated its themes and Statham’s performance. King, known for reviewing books, movies, and shows and for publicly criticizing Donald Trump, likely connected with the film’s political elements, as reflected in his review.
