As a sci-fi fan, I’m so excited about the new Stargate series coming to Prime Video! The Expanse left a huge gap when it ended, and I think this is exactly what the genre needs right now. I’ll never forget how Amazon saved The Expanse after Syfy canceled it – it was a brilliant move for them. That show really put Prime Video on the map as a major player in sci-fi, right up there with Apple TV, and I’m hoping Stargate will continue that momentum!
With the end of The Expanse three years ago leaving some fans wanting more, Prime Video has announced a new Stargate series. Amazon MGM Studios has approved the project, which will be written by Marin Gero, a veteran of the Stargate franchise. This is exciting news for sci-fi fans, as a show like Stargate is exactly what the genre is currently missing.
Stargate Is The Sci-Fi Show That Television Is Missing
The Stargate series began in the 1990s and quickly became popular alongside other science fiction shows of the era. Each episode featured a new, self-contained adventure as the team traveled through space. While there was a continuing storyline, Stargate kept things exciting by introducing new planets, allies, and foes almost every time.
Modern science fiction shows often favor intricate, sprawling stories that require a significant time commitment – it’s hard to start watching from the middle. This style is popular, but older, episodic series like Stargate offer a lighter, more accessible experience. Combined with a wave of ’90s nostalgia, Prime Video’s new Stargate has the potential to fill a gap for viewers who miss this kind of show.
The Expanse’s Ending Left A Void That Has Yet To Be Filled
While not structured like a show with self-contained episodes, The Expanse offered the same captivating appeal as series like Stargate. Though shows such as Severance challenge viewers with complex psychological themes, The Expanse felt more like a classic space opera, set across the solar system with intriguing alien technology. Since it ended in 2022, no other show has quite filled the void it left.
Sci-Fi Is Thriving On TV – But We Need More Traditional Space Operas
Even though fans miss The Expanse, science fiction on TV is currently experiencing a strong resurgence. Apple TV+ has established itself with compelling series like Foundation, Severance, and Pluribus, while Prime Video has delivered both thought-provoking shows like Outer Range and darkly comedic ones like The Boys. It’s clear that excellent sci-fi can come in many different styles, but we seem to have drifted away from some of the genre’s classic roots.
We haven’t seen a classic, ongoing space adventure on TV in a while. While it’s good that science fiction is evolving, we shouldn’t lose the fun, slightly cheesy charm of shows we loved before. The original Stargate series might be exactly what we need to bring that balance back to modern sci-fi.
