‘Star Wars’: This Quote Restored the Franchise After 39 Years

Most Star Wars fans remember the famous line, “May the Force be with you.” It’s become a well-known phrase, even for people who aren’t fans of the films. This quote also sparked curiosity about the Force itself – a mysterious energy that connects everything in the Star Wars galaxy. The Force can be used by those who are sensitive to it, like the Jedi and the Sith. The Jedi use the light side of the Force, while the Sith embrace the dark side, representing the struggle between good and evil. Creator George Lucas drew inspiration for the Force from various religions, philosophies, and the New Age movement of the 1970s. He was also influenced by the 1964 short film 21-87 by Canadian filmmaker Arthur Lipsett.

Although the Force has spiritual origins, it doesn’t always feel spiritual. The phrase “May the Force be with you” often sounds similar to saying “God be with you.” But a quote from the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story really captures the true essence of the Force by giving us a new way to understand it.

Chirrut Îmwe’s Quote in ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ Makes the Force Mystical

Lucasfilm

In the film Rogue One, the popular character Chirrut Îmwe (played by Donnie Yen) teams up with rebels Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed), K-2SO (Alan Tudyk), and Baze Malbus (Wen Jiang) to steal the plans for the first Death Star. They succeed in their mission, ultimately leading to the Death Star’s destruction, but everyone in the group dies. Chirrut gives his life to help Jyn and Cassian reach the Imperial archives, bravely facing many Stormtroopers – who happen to be accurate shooters. During the Battle of Scarif, Chirrut, despite being blind, walks through a dangerous battlefield while being shot at, repeating a mantra to give himself strength.

“I’m one with the Force, and the Force is with me.”

Chirrut belonged to the Guardians of the Whills, a religious group distinct from the Jedi Order. They were warrior monks known for their deep spirituality. He was also skilled in Zama-shiwo, a martial art from his home planet of Jedha. Because of all this, Chirrut had a particularly strong connection to the Force. Despite being blind, he trusted completely in the Force, even when facing danger. This illustrates the Light side’s goal of unity with the Force, contrasting with the Sith, who seek to control it.

The Force Is Bigger Than All of Us in ‘Star Wars’

Lucasfilm

This quote fundamentally shifts how we understand the Force in Star Wars. It emphasizes that the Force isn’t just a power, but everything – a vast, mysterious energy that’s impossible to fully grasp. It suggests the Star Wars galaxy is far bigger than what we see in the films, echoing our own understanding of the universe as a limitless space filled with countless galaxies. We are incredibly small within this immense cosmos, just one tiny part of something enormous. Chirrut’s words give Star Wars a sense of awe and perspective, hinting at a greater power that puts our everyday struggles into context. When heroes fight for something truly important, like those on Scarif, personal problems seem much less significant.

Chirrut accepts his fate instead of resisting it, finding liberation in surrender. He believes death will bring him closer to the Force. Like many with strong faith, he trusts the Force to guide his actions, giving him the strength he needs to fight for good one final time. This belief brings him a sense of calm, meaning, and comfort.
