Star Wars: Starfighter Features Lightsaber Duel Shot by Tom Cruise

I was so surprised to hear this! Apparently, Tom Cruise actually is in a Star Wars movie! It’s not as an actor, though. The director of Star Wars: Starfighter, Shawn Levy, just shared the story of how he managed to get Tom Cruise to film a quick scene for the film. It’s a fun little bit of trivia for any Star Wars fan!

How did Tom Cruise end up working on Star Wars: Starfighter?

Tom Cruise is well-known for being very involved in making his movies. He usually stars in and produces them, giving him a lot of control over how they’re made. But his involvement as a producer on the recently completed film, Starfighter, happened unexpectedly.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, director J.J. Abrams shared that Tom Cruise unexpectedly started operating the camera on the set of the new Star Wars film. Abrams joked that Cruise, who was initially just visiting like Steven Spielberg, was so involved he was risking damage to his shoes.

The visit from Cruise happened in November 2025. Director Levy remembered that Cruise initially just wanted to observe a lightsaber fight being filmed in the water. But after Levy playfully suggested Cruise get behind the camera, Cruise surprisingly took him seriously and walked into the muddy pond to operate it himself.

Levy mentioned that viewers will recognize some scenes filmed by his son, Tom, adding, ‘Isn’t that amazing?’

Lucasfilm revealed a new Star Wars film, titled Starfighter, at Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025. The movie takes place five years after The Rise of Skywalker and will focus on the story of an uncle-nephew duo, played by Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray.

The cast of the new Star Wars film includes Ryan Gosling and Moses Ingram, as well as familiar faces like Mia Goth, Matt Smith, Aaron Pierre, and Amy Adams. Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings are also appearing in the movie.

Star Wars: Starfighter is scheduled to hit theaters on May 28, 2027.
