While shows like Andor and The Mandalorian have received a lot of well-deserved attention, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew hasn’t gotten enough credit. Since Disney bought Lucasfilm over ten years ago, the quality of Star Wars content has been inconsistent – we’ve seen both excellent and disappointing entries in the franchise.
Many expected Skeleton Crew to be a major success for Disney and Star Wars, potentially reigniting fan enthusiasm like The Mandalorian’s first season or both seasons of Andor. However, it didn’t generate much buzz and quickly faded from attention.
Skeleton Crew Is The Most Underrated Star Wars TV Show
Many fans consider Skeleton Crew to be the most overlooked Star Wars TV series, and a refreshing change of pace from recent installments. It addresses common criticisms of shows like The Rise of Skywalker – which some felt catered too much to existing fans – and Ahsoka, which prioritized expanding the Star Wars universe over a compelling narrative. Essentially, Skeleton Crew delivers what many viewers hoped those other shows would.
This isn’t a story about expanding the Star Wars universe or connecting to shows like The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and The Book of Boba Fett. Instead, it’s a surprisingly focused coming-of-age story. It doesn’t rely on appearances from established characters or unresolved plot points that will be continued elsewhere. It’s a complete, standalone Star Wars adventure, and it’s really enjoyable.
Skeleton Crew Is A Reminder Of What Star Wars Should Be
Skeleton Crew feels a lot like The Goonies, but set in space. The story begins in a normal, everyday neighborhood in a distant galaxy, and quickly follows a group of kids who accidentally get caught up in a huge adventure. They’ll encounter dangerous pirates and those who wield the Force for evil. Ultimately, the show captures the fun, family-friendly spirit that made Star Wars so beloved.
Will Skeleton Crew Ever Get A Season 2?
Disney hasn’t officially confirmed a second season of Skeleton Crew yet, but the show’s creator, Jon Watts, hinted at the possibility last summer. Carefully avoiding any trouble with Disney, Watts simply stated, “I love Star Wars, and I’d love to make more of it.”
However, he also noted that Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, the lead producers on Skeleton Crew and the masterminds behind the *Mandalorianuniverse, prioritize their creative vision over streaming statistics. As Watts put it, Favreau and Filoni simply make what they want to make.
Despite a somewhat disappointing first season, a second season of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is still possible. However, Disney needs to move quickly with it. The show follows young characters who are growing up, and the actors themselves are also getting older, just like in Stranger Things. Disney needs to learn from that experience and avoid delays.
