Star Wars Reveals Its 5th Villain to Jump from Animation to Live-Action

Fans can see The Mandalorian & Grogu in theaters starting May 26th, and it features many characters they already love. Pedro Pascal reprises his role as Din Djarin, Grogu returns with him, and Dave Filoni is once again directing, continuing the story he helped build. However, the movie also introduces new and exciting elements beyond those familiar faces.

Star Wars has confirmed that Embo, the intimidating bounty hunter from The Clone Wars animated series, will be a major villain in an upcoming film. This continues a trend for the franchise: bringing popular characters from the animated shows into live-action movies.

Embo is the newest animated Star Wars villain to appear in a live-action role. He’s taking over as the primary antagonist from Moff Gideon, who won’t be back for Din Djarin’s upcoming movie.

In the movie, Embo is paid by two Hutt gangsters to eliminate Rotta the Hutt (played by Jeremy Allen White). This mission brings him into direct conflict with Din Djarin, as Mando is asked by the New Republic to save Rotta, ultimately putting them on a path to confrontation.

The new trailer features Embo walking toward a hut on Nevarro during a rainstorm, which emphasizes how frightening the character is.

Embo is anticipated to be a truly intimidating villain, just like other characters successfully brought to life from animation. Characters like Cad Bane have already raised the bar, so it will be fascinating to see if this new version of Embo can be even more impressive.

Animated Villains Who Have Made a Jump To Live Action

Bo-Katan Kryze

Bo-Katan Kryze was first introduced in The Clone Wars, with Katee Sackhoff providing her voice. Initially, she was a lieutenant for Death Watch, a group trying to take over Mandalore and overthrow its peaceful leader, Duchess Satine Kryze. Throughout the series, Bo-Katan developed from a strong but uncertain fighter into a key character, ultimately claiming the Darksaber and becoming the ruler of Mandalore in Star Wars Rebels.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I was really excited when Bo-Katan Kryze finally made it to live-action in The Mandalorian. What I loved was that Lucasfilm brought Katee Sackhoff along for the ride! She’d been the voice of Bo-Katan in animated shows for almost ten years, and it was awesome to see her actually play the character on screen. It’s pretty rare in Star Wars – or even in most franchises, really – to have someone originate a role in animation and then get to bring it to life in live-action. It felt like a really cool nod to the character’s history and Sackhoff’s dedication.

The Grand Inquisitor

The Grand Inquisitor first appeared in the animated series Star Wars Rebels as the commander of the Inquisitorius – a group of former Jedi who hunted others for Darth Vader. This intimidating Pau’an was one of the show’s scariest villains, and served as the main enemy in Season 1 before being defeated.

Rupert Friend first appeared as a live-action character in the series Obi-Wan Kenobi. Set in the Star Wars universe before the events of Rebels, the show featured Friend as the Grand Inquisitor, a powerful figure leading the pursuit of remaining Jedi.

The Fifth Brother

As a huge Star Wars fan, I remember when the Fifth Brother first showed up in Season 2 of Rebels. Philip Anthony-Rodriguez really brought him to life with his voice. Basically, Palpatine sent him in after the Grand Inquisitor went down to keep the hunt for Jedi going. He wasn’t one for subtlety; the Fifth Brother was all about raw power and physical intimidation. Sadly, his story ended on Malachor when Darth Maul took him out.

Sung Kang, known for his role in the Fast & Furious movies, played the Fifth Brother in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Because the show is set before the events of Rebels, viewers saw a younger Fifth Brother who was powerful, but still developing and working under the command of Darth Vader and the Grand Inquisitor.

Cad Bane

Fans had eagerly anticipated seeing Cad Bane, a blue-skinned, red-eyed bounty hunter, brought to life after his debut in the animated series The Clone Wars. He quickly became known as one of the most formidable mercenaries in the Star Wars galaxy, working directly for Darth Sidious and facing off against heroes like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker – and consistently surviving where others would have fallen.

Cad Bane recently appeared in live-action form in The Book of Boba Fett. The character was brought to life physically by stuntman Dorian Kingi, and voiced once again by Corey Burton, who previously voiced Bane in The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch. Many fans consider this portrayal to be one of the most accurate adaptations of an animated character into live-action in the history of Star Wars.

Bane’s arrival in Freetown felt like something out of an old Western movie, and his confrontation with Cobb Vanth quickly established him as a skilled gunslinger. Even more significantly, the show finally explored his existing connection to Boba Fett, culminating in an exciting fight between the two in the final episode.

Grand Admiral Thrawn

Grand Admiral Thrawn is a legendary villain in the Star Wars universe. He originally appeared in a 1991 novel called Heir to the Empire, before the official Star Wars timeline was established, and later returned as the main villain in the Star Wars Rebels series. Thrawn is a Chiss tactician with blue skin and red eyes who wins battles not just with force, but by understanding his opponents’ art, culture, and way of thinking. He’s a rare Star Wars villain who is truly frightening because of his intelligence.

Lars Mikkelsen, who originally voiced the character Thrawn in the animated series Rebels, returned to play the same role in live-action in the 2023 show Ahsoka. Similar to Katee Sackhoff’s portrayal of Bo-Katan, Mikkelsen’s casting allowed the same actor to bring the character to life in both animation and live-action. His live-action Thrawn was just as strategic and deliberate as his animated counterpart.
