‘Star Wars’ Made Obi-Wan’s Home Planet Canon After a George Lucas Joke

It’s common for Jedi to be taken from their families at a very young age, before they have strong memories of their early lives, which is why the Star Wars universe doesn’t often explore this period. However, some Jedi do have more detailed backstories. Obi-Wan Kenobi is one example, as we know the name of the planet where he was born. Interestingly, the story of how the creators came up with that planet’s name is quite amusing.

Alec Guinness first played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars trilogy. Later, Ewan McGregor took on the role as a younger Obi-Wan in 1999’s The Phantom Menace. Both actors have portrayed the Jedi in three films each, but McGregor also returned to the character in the 2022 Disney+ series, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ultimately, both Guinness and McGregor played the same character at different stages of his life, and Star Wars has established that they share a common home planet.

George Lucas Announced the Name of Obi-Wan’s Home Planet in 2010

20th Century Fox

Star Wars Celebration is an event held several times that celebrates everything about the Star Wars universe. It began in 1999 and has taken place 16 times so far. At these events, fans can often see actors and creators from the Star Wars franchise, participate in interviews, and get sneak peeks at upcoming projects. A notable moment occurred at Celebration V in August 2010 when Star Wars creator George Lucas was interviewed by Jon Stewart. During the interview, Stewart famously asked Lucas about the name of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s home planet.

I was so amused when Lucas instantly responded to a question with “Stewjon” – it was clearly a fun play on the interviewer’s name, Stewart! What’s really interesting is that fans have actually started treating it as if it’s a real Star Wars planet. It honestly sounds like it belongs in the galaxy far, far away, and because it came directly from the creator of Obi-Wan himself, everyone seems happy to accept it as canon. We’d been wondering about the answer to that question for ages, so hearing it from George made it feel instantly believable.

‘Star Wars’ Officially Revisited Stewjon in 2017

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

For a long time, Stewjon was a little-known part of the Star Wars universe. After Disney bought the franchise a few years after George Lucas playfully mentioned it at Celebration V, it seemed like it might just be a one-time joke. However, in 2017, Stewjon was officially acknowledged in Star Wars canon, finally establishing Obi-Wan Kenobi’s home planet as a real place.

Though a minor detail, a character named Tadd appeared in an issue of the Star Wars Adventures comic series, which is part of the official Star Wars storyline. Landry Q. Walker, the writer who created Tadd, shared more about the Rebel pilot on X (formerly Twitter), including his last name, Marteens, and his background as a farmer from the planet Stewjon. This is the only time Stewjon has been mentioned since George Lucas first referenced it in 2010. Because Tadd was specifically created for the current Star Wars canon, this feels like a deliberate creative decision rather than a casual comment.
