Mark Hamill, best known for playing Luke Skywalker in all the Star Wars films, has shared his thoughts on Ryan Gosling joining the franchise. Gosling, who stars in the upcoming Barbie movie, will appear in Star Wars: Starfighter, currently in production and scheduled for release in 2027 – a year after the new film featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu. Though we’ve only seen a little of Gosling and his fellow actors so far, early signs are positive. The film is being directed by Shawn Levy, known for his work on Stranger Things and Deadpool & Wolverine, and Hamill seems to approve.
According to PEOPLE magazine, Mark Hamill recently spoke at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival about Ryan Gosling being cast in the new Star Wars film. While Hamill, 74, has stated he’s finished with Star Wars and wants to pass the torch to a new actor, the question remains: could Gosling become the next Skywalker?
Mark Hamill, known for playing Luke Skywalker, jokingly said he’s always been a fan of Ryan Gosling, but became a huge fan after seeing Gosling play Beavis on Saturday Night Live. He was referencing a sketch where Gosling portrayed the animated character Beavis from the 1990s MTV show Beavis and Butt-Head, calling it the best live-action version he’s ever seen. Gosling is a highly accomplished actor with three Academy Award nominations.
The famous Star Wars actor also shared that he doesn’t think the new cast needs his guidance, and even suggested he might be the one seeking advice from them someday. He said, “They’re all doing great and don’t need my input. My time has passed, and I expect I’ll be asking them for advice soon.”
What Is ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ All About?

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
It’s been six years since Mark Hamill last played Luke Skywalker in The Rise of Skywalker. In the prior film, The Last Jedi, Luke makes a heroic sacrifice while battling his nephew, Kylo Ren. He uses the Force to create a projection of himself, buying time but ultimately exhausting his aged body and becoming one with the Force. This ending, along with other choices about the character (who later appears as a Force ghost in The Rise of Skywalker), proved controversial among fans of the long-running saga.
I’m really excited about the new Star Wars movie, Starfighter! While we don’t have a ton of details yet, I’ve learned that Jonathan Tropper is writing the screenplay, which is awesome because he worked with Shawn Levy on The Adam Project! The cast is looking incredible too – Ryan Gosling is leading, and he’ll be joined by Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Aaron Pierre, Mia Goth, Amy Adams, Simon Bird, and a bunch of other talented actors. I can’t wait to see more!
Scheduled for release in May 2027 – coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the original Star Wars – the film is set after the events of Episode 9. However, director Levy has clarified that it shouldn’t be considered a direct continuation of the story.
This isn’t a continuation of the existing Star Wars story, nor does it go back to the past. It’s a completely fresh adventure with new characters, capturing the spirit of Star Wars we all enjoy. The story unfolds in a new era, following the events of Episode 9 and the Battle of Exegol.
