Star Wars is Setting Up Grogu as the Next Yoda

As the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu gets closer, Disney’s really been pushing promotion for their next movie in theaters. And honestly, it makes total sense – a lot of the ads feature Grogu. That little guy instantly became a fan favorite when he showed up in the first episode of The Mandalorian, and it’s easy to see why! He’s incredibly cute, plus he’s one of only three members of Yoda’s species we’ve ever seen in official Star Wars canon – the other being Yaddle. It’s a rare find!

Before his real name, Grogu, was revealed in season two of The Mandalorian, fans affectionately called him Baby Yoda – a nickname that stuck. Disney preferred the name “The Child” to avoid confusing viewers into thinking he was a young Yoda. However, the latest trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu strongly suggests Grogu is meant to carry on Yoda’s legacy. The upcoming film is therefore crucial, not only for Grogu’s story, but for the future of the entire Star Wars franchise.

The Mandalorian and Grogu’s Trailer Called Back to the Skywalker Saga

The latest trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu featured several scenes that reminded viewers of Yoda, particularly the young Grogu. Some of Grogu’s scenes were filmed on a swampy planet, leading fans to believe it might be Dagobah – the same planet where Yoda first appeared in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back. In one shot, Grogu is even seen using a walking stick to move through the marsh, just like Yoda did.

Later in the trailer, Grogu encounters a snake-like alien sitting in a rocking chair. While little is known about this character, his appearance briefly brought to mind a figure from the older ‘Legends’ stories of Star Wars. Although he wasn’t exactly N’Kata or another Hysalrian – he had two eyes instead of the usual four – the scene seems to link Grogu’s story to Yoda’s, and suggests this alien might become a mentor to him in the upcoming film.

The trailer also highlighted Grogu’s growing abilities with the Force, showing him lifting and destroying a small droid and jumping impressively high. Although Grogu didn’t continue Jedi training in The Book of Boba Fett, his practice has clearly made him stronger and is bringing him closer to the level of Force mastery achieved by Yoda.

Grogu’s Character Arc Will Make The Mandalorian and Grogu Essential Viewing

I’ve loved watching Grogu in The Mandalorian, and it’s been so sweet seeing everyone try to keep him safe and help him learn. But Din Djarin’s right – Grogu’s going to outlive all of us! As he starts to follow the path Yoda took, it’s clear he’s going to become a bigger part of the Star Wars universe, and I’m excited to see what adventures await him for years to come. It’s great knowing we won’t be saying goodbye to him anytime soon!

We don’t know everything about Yoda’s species’ lifespan, but according to the official Star Wars: Timelines book, Grogu would be 76 years old by the end of the sequel trilogy. This means he could potentially join Rey’s new Jedi Order with existing Force abilities. Similar to Yoda, he could then share his knowledge with future Jedi students, and might even become the next Grand Master.

Even though The Mandalorian has been a huge hit on streaming, making a movie continuation is a gamble. The film needs to feel like a new story, not just an extended version of the show. A great way to achieve this would be to further develop Grogu’s character, making him a central figure for future Star Wars films. Similar to how Yoda connected the original and prequel trilogies, Grogu could become the defining character of the next chapter in the Star Wars saga.
