Star Wars: Hayden Christensen Reveals Iconic RotS Scene Robert De Niro Watched on Set

You won’t believe this behind-the-scenes story from Revenge of the Sith. Hayden Christensen told me he actually crossed paths with Robert De Niro while they were shooting one of the film’s most memorable sequences. It was a pretty surreal moment, apparently!

What did Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor say about meeting Robert De Niro?

A key scene in Revenge of the Sith features an intense lightsaber fight between Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) on the planet Mustafar. Hayden Christensen recently shared at Fan Expo New Orleans that Robert De Niro was present on set while they filmed this famous battle.

According to Christensen, Robert De Niro unexpectedly arrived on set one day. Christensen recalled being with Ewan McGregor when McGregor pointed out De Niro and asked if it was really him. They were both thrilled. De Niro approached them and was very welcoming. Christensen had been doing push-ups between takes to get energized, and De Niro noticed, sharing that he did the same thing – which Christensen found encouraging.

McGregor recalls De Niro coming to the set that day, but he has a funny story about finding out about the visit. He learned while he was playfully spinning on a piece of equipment used for the film.

Ewan McGregor recounted a story from the set where he learned Robert De Niro was unexpectedly visiting. While filming a scene and waiting for the next take, he overheard someone mention De Niro might be coming. As he turned around, still being adjusted by a prop assistant, he spotted De Niro standing behind the monitor and jokingly thought, “It’s too late – he’s already here!”

I have to admit, hearing Ewan McGregor recount the story of that on-set mishap years later to Robert De Niro was genuinely funny. He described the whole thing as utterly humiliating, and you could really feel for him, even while chuckling along. It’s a great anecdote that shows even seasoned actors have moments they’d rather forget!

Okay, Star Wars fans, get excited! Hayden Christensen is officially coming back as Anakin Skywalker for Season 2 of Ahsoka. While Disney+ hasn’t announced when we’ll get to see it yet, knowing he’s returning is huge news and I, for one, can’t wait to see what they have planned!
